Her Majesty has approved of the appointment of Mr. Monro as Commissioner of Metropolitan Police in the room of Sir Charles Warren, resigned. Mr. Monro has been engaged in the police service since the year 1857, and was formerly head of the Indian Police. He was appointed Assistant Commissioner at Scotland-yard on the retirement of Mr. Howard Vincent from the office of Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department, and succeeded that gentleman in charge of the departments. Quite recently Mr. Monro resigned his appointment in consequence of differences of opinion with Sir Charles Warren upon questions of police administration, but an arrangement was made whereby the Home Secretary could have the benefit of his continued advice upon questions relating to the investigation of crime. Mr. Monro is very popular with the officers and men of the Metropolitan Force, and it is understood that his appointment will be regarded by them with much satisfaction.
