POLICE BELIEVE THAT THEY HAVE A DANGEROUS CHARACTER TO DEAL WITH.
Chicago, Jan. 21.
That Chicago is harboring a second Whitechapel fiend is the opinion expressed today by Assistant Police Chief Schuettler,
following the report of the coroner's physician after a post-mortem on the body of Mrs. Jennie Cleghorn, also known as Anna
Furlong, found decapitated and mutilated yesterday in a south side flat. Schuettler says all the circumstances indicate the
work of the author of the Whitechapel murders, who cut and slashed the bodies of his victims to gratify his passion. He said
he would not be surprised to hear of another murder of exactly the same character in Chicago. The post-mortem revealed the
mutilation of the corpse much more horrifying than the police first believed. Basing their deductions on the post-mortem
revelations, the police have formulated a theory that the murderer crept into the woman's room while she slept and strangled
her before she could utter a cry. The trachea was found crushed. After the woman was dead the police believe the murderer
used a dull knife to inflict the appalling mutilations found on the body.
Many detectives believe the slayer will be found to be a man familiar with the medical profession. The post-mortem showed, they declare, that he had an intimate knowledge of anatomy, having carefully mutilated all the vital parts of the corpse.
Mrs. Cleghorn was the only regular inmate of the flat at home when the crime was committed. This has increased the difficulties of the police in ferreting out the mystery. Although fifty detectives have been constantly at work on the case since the crime was committed, they have failed to learn anything to support the claim of the original theories of the crime was revenge or insane jealousy. They declare all evidence supports the belief that a wanton, perverted, insane lust for the sight of blood caused the crime. The only chance the police now see opf capturing the murderer is by tracing the bloody head which he carried off with him. The fact that there were no bloodstains anywhere in the flat except in Mrs. Cleghorn's room indicated to the police that the slayer took his bloody relic far away. Seven persons are held today in connection with the crime. No charges have been placed against the names but they are held pending further investigation. They are james Isabelle, colored; Tillie Taylor, colored; Tillie Wilson, white; Dan Stein, a structural iron worker; Jack Smeaton and Tom Moore, colored, and Lillie Dale, white.
John Edwards, an Indian, who was detained by the police last night, was released today.
