Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Media: Specific Titles: Non-Fiction: Jack the Ripper: 100 Years of Investigation (Sharkey)

Published to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Whitechapel atrocities, this is a very basic overview of the whole case. The text is fairly simple but it's also clear and there are good photographs throughout. It will give readers a working knowledge of the case without drowning them in too much detail. More for the idle curious rather than serious Ripperologists.

Jack the Ripper, 100 Years of Investigation - The Facts, The Fiction, The Solution, by Terence Sharkey, Dorset Press, NY, (1987,1992). A brief - 144 pages, with short bibliography and index - summation of the murders, ending with very short biographies of the suspects, and a discussion of his (or her) identity. Informative, but the writing style needs help.

Not a long book by any means, this runs quickly through the facts and tries to end with a cutesie "suspect line-up" which is supposed to be enough (according to Sharkey) for the reader to form his/her own opinion. It's not. Other than the patronizing final chapter, though, the book did stick to the facts and was more or les an interesting read. The cover art prima facie gives one the opinion that the book is a second-rate, commercial book written in order to make a quick buck in the space of perhaps two weeks, but after reading it, I must admit my impression changed radically... It could very well have taken three.
