Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Media: Specific Titles: Non-Fiction: Jack the Ripper: A Collector's Guide (Strachan)
Author: Stephen P. Ryder Thursday, 19 November 1998 - 12:06 am | |
Name: Stephen P. Ryder Date: Sat Oct 31 16:56:20 1998 A godsend for the Ripper collector, Strachan has compiled an extensive listing of the literature of the case. The book itself (printed in booklet form, cardstock dividers, spiral binding) is split into three chapters: Factual Works, Fictional Works, and Other Collectable Works. There is also a list of "Useful Addresses," including a number of rare/used book dealers who specialize in true crime and, by extension, Jack the Ripper. The revised (May, 1997) edition has added a number of titles to each section in three separate appendices. The book listings are chronological according to the date published, and each has appraisals of "Availability" and "Value." Strachan's lists are impressive, going so far as to include different editions of the same book so as to differentiate their value. There are also various cover illustrations interspersed throughout the book. As discussed in the introduction to the book, Strachan's work does not dwell upon the facts or theories of the case, simply the literature. It is truly a worthy addition to any collector's shelf, and its usefulness to the rare book collector is premium.
