Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Media: Specific Titles: Non-Fiction: Jack the Ripper: One Hundred Years of Mystery (Underwood)
Author: Michael Rogers Thursday, 19 November 1998 - 12:45 am | |
Another of the no doubt dozens of books written to tie in with the Ripper centennial in 1988, most of which like this one went out of print as quickly as they came. Underwood provides a broad overview of the case, so it is an okay choice for the beginner, but serious Ripperologists will find nothing new here. The photographs are a little fuzzy but they do show what many of the sites look like today, which is a nice plus. For those unfamiliar with Underwood, he is Britain's premier ghost hunter and has written several titles on that subject.

Anyone interested in this book (particularly now that a case has been made for it being the basis of the "Diary of Jack the Ripper") may be interested to know that I'm auctioning off a paperback copy on eBay. Bids start at $14.99, and all proceeds go back to the website. See: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=367114142

SECOND OPINION NEEDED ON THIS BOOK: I read what Michael Rogers had to say above, but I'm also aware that one mans trash is another man's gold. Is this book merely a centenary overview, or is there anything worthwhile in it for someone who already has 100 Ripper books? Your input would be appreciated. Yours truly, Tom Wescott

Dear Tom, It's probably ok as an historical piece and a collectors - I doubt you'll get much more from it. DLL

Tom, I've got two copies, you can have them both......honest! Enuff said??? Nothing new in there my friend though if you're in to ghost stories then its worth a look. It also was the first book which I came across that mentions James Kelly. The suspect that James Tulley wrote about in "Prisoner 1167".

The only real nuggets that interested me in Underwood's book were some snippets of interviews or private correspondence with some of the well-known Ripper authors. If I recall correctly (my books are currently in storage) it includes interviews/correspondence with Tully, Rumbelow, Whittington-Egan and many others. Apart from that, its a fairly basic overview, though hardcover copies are somewhat hard to find.

Everyone, Thanks for the input. It sounds like just an average centeniary piece. But at Monty's prices, who can go wrong! Monty, Thank you for the overly generous offer, Monty, but actually I couldn't accept that. If you're serious about getting rid of the books, I'll be glad to buy one off of you for $10. Just email me at Tcwes@aol.com with your address and I'll send it to you in cash. Once again, thanks a lot! If there's any books you're after, let me know and I'll see what I can do, either from my own collection or someone elses. Yours truly, Tom Wescott
