Hi John,

A reading which, thus far, I agree with completely. The whole diary, provenance aside, seems unbelievably hokey... if only we could see Maybrick twirling his moustache before flourishing his cape then we could set the whole thing to slightly-too-manic piano playing and have done with it!

Looking forward to the next installment...

P.S.
The "4000 holes" are a reference to a slightly surrealistic story that ran in the same issue of the Time that Lennon lifted the main story of Day In The Life From ("...he blew his mind out in a car"). The story reported that Blackburn council had discovered 4000 holes in its roads - an average of 1.8 per resident or something - and had nothing to do with the Albert Hall beyond a bit of free-association on Lennon's part.

Hey Paul,

Thanks for the "4000 Holes" correction. It may have just been my own faulty memory from earlier days when I was not always completely coherent in any case. :)

Tomorrow, I'll look at the diary's next few pages; but in the meantime, I'm sure there are other items of interest in the first two and that many people out there probably see stuff I have completely missed. I look forward to reading Chris' thoughts, and those of anyone else who notices something interesting or even worth a mention.

This should all just be fun.

Thanks again,

--John

Hi, Caz:

My tuppence worth is that our penman was writing to the height of their ability rather than trying to "dumb down" to show up Maybrick as an oaf. I think penman was as delighted with the wordplay and how "clever" he/she was as Maybrick is supposed to have been. And I do think you are correct that, in the process of writing, certain words were inadvertently left out which explains incomplete thoughts such as "No one, not even God himself will away the pleasure. . .", "I will put whore through pain tonight", and "The whore seen her master today." The latter example mirrors Liverpool working class speech and it may have been both inadvertent and subconscious in that the penman, if we are correct in our assumption that he/she was of working class background, may have thought in making the mistake, "That sounds right."

The notions of Maybrick voyeuristically wanting to see Florie with another man or of himself actually taking part in a threesome is an interesting element. It also goes against the idea that Maybrick was so outraged about her being with another man and about being cuckolded that he needed to murder whores to get his revenge, doesn't it?

Best regards

Chris

P.S. Fine re the Freddie Fudpuckers in Bournemouth. Just don't expect me to ask the barman for it by name, especially after I have had a couple of Harvey Wallbangers!!!

Keith:
You say: "I believe that Shirley Harrison has been attempting, without
success, to contact you in order to progress and try to
agree a date and venue for our meeting"
I have been in regular contact with Shirley who told me on Sunday: "Yes I have kept Keith
completely au fait with our correspondence...." So therefore you know the process of our emails and knew them at the time you made the above message. I presume that you made this misleading post in order to give the impression that you and Shirley were eager to cooperate but that I was holding up matters. I am sure that you will like to correct that impression.
I am sure that Shirley will tell you my opinions concerning taping such a meeting.

From Keith Skinner to Peter Birchwood

I’ve openly put this message up for you in order to keep the board up to speed with developments behind the scenes.

I believe that Shirley Harrison has been attempting, without success, to contact you in order to progress and try to agree a date and venue for our meeting. Is there a problem? It looks like Melvin Harris attaches no importance to joining us, preferring to believe he has proved his case that the diary is a modern hoax. Sadly he hasn’t. Hopefully though, Karoline Leach will be accompanying you.

To avoid any misunderstandings or unintentional misrepresentations, do you agree that a tape recording should be made of the meeting so the board can be reliably and accurately informed as to what was discussed?

By the way, how are you getting on with Steve Powell?
