Desperately seeking reasonably comprehensive list of Ripper themed docos screened in UK in past ten years. Big hug for anyone leading to successful location of title/channel/year of broadcast. Thanks, Kieron Humphrey Lonodn, U.K.

Kieron - This is hardly a comprehensive UK list, but I can give you 3 entries from Alexander Kelly's "JTR: a Bibliography and Review of the Literature" (1994 edition) 1. "The Black Museum," September 6 1988 broadcast, ITV Central production. A tour and discussion of the famous Scotland Yard museum with curator William Waddell.Only a few minutes devoted to JTR. 2. "Crime Monthly: Who Was JTR?," August 10 1990 LWT Broadcast (not networked). 3. "Timewatch: Shadow of the Ripper," September 7 1988 broadcast on BBC 2, hosted by Christopher Frayling. Hope this little bit helps. Christopher-Michael

Kieron: To CM's listing I'd add the infamous Diary of JTR and the Tumblety themed doc. both of which may have been on channell 4 and therefore unwatchable by anyone living west of Shrewsbury. I think that the second one was a Discovery channel Biography. If you're thinking of adding another to the list, there's plenty of new information out there. Peter.

Peter and Kieron: The Discovery Channel documentary was called "Jack the Ripper: Phantom of Death" and came out - I believe - approximately 2 years ago. I didn't mention it, as I was unaware that DC broadcasted in the UK (shows you what I know). I may as well mention "The Secret Identity of JTR," which was a Cosgrove-Muerer production broadcast everywhere BUT the UK in November 1988. There was a video made of this, but it's damned difficult to find. CMD

The Channel 4 hour-long programme promoting Tumblety was part of David Jessel's "Secret History" series, which has covered many famous people such as Enid Blyton, Baden Powell, Douglas Bader etc. The programme was produced around the same time as Stewart Evans' and Paul Gainey's book came out. It was released as a video "given away" with the Ripper edition of the Murder Casebook series (ie the magazine cost 7-odd quid instead of £2.50. As you'd expect, there's some input from Stewart, who I'm sure can offer more details. The Discovery Channel programme was released as a video about 18 months ago. It's presented by Robert Graves, with comments from Don Rumbelow, Martin Fido, Melvin Harris and Bill Fishman among others. If you spot a copy it's well worth purchasing. Adam

I've been receiving these rather odd e-mails from a Philip Beardsworth Date: 02 May 1999 10:27 Have you got any Jack the Ripper videos you could sell me? My reply: Sorry, No. Date: 03 May 1999 12:05 > > Why not? No reply from me. Date: 03 May 1999 12:06 Why haven't you got any Jack the Ripper videos you could sell me? No reply Date: 07 May 1999 19:41 Well tough you will sell me Jack the Ripper videos weather you like it or not! Date: 07 May 1999 19:43 Well you are thick! Now I have no wish to spoil somebodies idea of a full and meaningfull conversation but as I'm not in this particular business, I thought I'd make public young Phillip's demands in the hope that someone out there can accomodate him. Maybe someone else has had similar correspondence? Peter.

I don't know if this might be significant - but one of the weird e-mails I was receiving last month had 'weather' spelt in the same anachronistic way. I wonder if the sender had the same address. K.

Speaking of movies and videos, I was wondering if any noted Ripperologists have appeared on video? Where might I obtain these videos? Other than a single photo on jacket covers here and there, I've never seen Paul Begg, Stewart Evans, Donald Rumbelow, Melvin Harris, Phillip Sugden. How I would love to see their faces moving, in sound and color, to know their mannerisms, their style of speaking, how they get on. What does Melvin Harris look like? How does Sugden speak? Does Evans wear a police uniform? In the absence of videos, perhaps some posting here who have met one or more of these writers might wish to share an impression or two with us. It would mean much to me. Thank you. David

Stewart Evans appears in the video of the Secret History programme The Whitechapel Murders, originally shown on Channel 4 Television in the UK, and yes, as I recall, he is wearing a police uniform. (Apologies to Stewart if I've remembered this incorrectly). Don Rumbelow also makes a brief appearence in the same programme. Paul Gainey is also featured, as the programme focusses on his and Stewart's investigation of Francis Tumbeltey. Anyone know of any others?

I hope my dear friend Stewart doesn't mind me saying this, but he doesn't wear his uniform any more because he's left the force, and he's become a much leaner character since he was on that video. He's a little like Cassius now. But only 'dangerous' to a deserving few, as these boards will attest. And personally, I think Don Rumbelow is incredibly sexy - but that's neither here nor there. K

HI Y'all. PAUL: Good to "see" you circulating again. THOM: Check out the Internet Movie Data Base site. They list the info Paul cites ... perhaps they can tell you how to contact Sinister Video direct. http://us.imdb.com/Details?0053961 Take care, Ashling

I seem to remember Paul Begg, Martin Fido and Don Rumbelow appearing in the 1988 LWT Crime Monthly J the R special - though not aware of its availability on video, luckily I taped it. Did anyone see the film documentary 'The London Nobody Knows'(1967) with James Mason? It contains footage of him going through the door out to the back of 29 Hanbury Street.

Yes Jane And I've been after a copy ever since, though at the time I saw the movie I didn't know much about Jack at all. I must have seen it the year it was released as a support movie to 'The Incredible Journey' but the only scene I can remember from Mason's movie is him standing in the back yard of No29, I don't recall anything else about it. Jon, He walks up to the door, knocks with the rusty old knocker, is let in by an old lady. Then stands in the back garden, a dog is scavenging around. The yard is very messy, you hear a passenger plane go overhead. He mentions some basic info, shows you the spot and that's it. Cor! wish'd I'd been around then. By the way, I did once know of a person who salvaged the door during demolition!

I'm trying to trace information about a BBC TV programme from the early 1970s in which Daniel Farson investigated the identity of Jack the Ripper. What I'd really like is to see the programme - but doubt any copies exist. Does anyone have any info about it?
| |
Author: Wolf Friday, 24 September 1999 - 11:32 am | |
Ben, I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but Daniel Farson did a programme on the Ripper as part of his series, Farson's guide to the British. Associated Rediffusion TV programmes (London) 5th and 12th November, 1959. It is possable that if you saw this in the 70's that that was a re-broadcast. Hope that helps. Wolf.

Hi Stuart, Ask Ross Stachan. If he doesn't have a copy, he may be able to locate one for you. ross@rstrachan.fsnet.co.uk. As well, you may want to try this longshot. http://www.s-k.productions.dial.pipex.com/archive/anews/dec2000/dec3.htm Also keep an eye out here, or even contact Simon Hall, who commented on the documentary. http://us.imdb.com/Title?0061914 Good hunting, John
