Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Media: Ripper Media: Microfiche and film of the London Papers

Hey all, Anybody know where I could order micro-film copies of the major papers of the day back in 1888? We've got the London Times in my school library, but I can't find any other major papers there...figure I might as well get them for myself. Any tips? B

Hi Brian - Use your university's Interlibrary Loan Program. If it was anything like mine when I was in university, its free for students - which is HUGE because when I use it now at my local library it costs between $10-$50 per item. I used to use ILL to get full runs of the Police News, Pall Mall Gazette, Star, Weekly News, Echo, Manchester Guardian.... pretty much 1/2 of the newspapers you see on the Casebook I picked up in college (the other half is thanks to Viper!). With ILL you have access to pretty much anything found in any library in America (and in many cases Europe as well). You'll have to wait a week or two to receive it, but its well worth it.

BTW: If you want to troll through some of the lesser-known papers, i.e. those that researchers probably have not gone through yet, drop me an email. I've got a copy of the April 1889 book "Newspapers Published in the United Kingdom", which lists practically every newspaper, by country, county and often, town. If there's a particular location you (or anyone else) would be interested in exploring, let me know and I'll send you a list of newspapers that came out of it.

Several people have already emailed requesting full lists of London newspapers from 1888, so I threw together a quick page at: http://casebook.org/press_reports/completelist.html This lists approximately 500-600 newspapers printed from various areas of London, in various categories of interest, from April 1889. In most cases the orignal year, and frequency, of publication are provided as well.

Stephen, Thanks buddy...this is very helpful. I'm off to the Gelman Library to get them to bring me reams of paper (or film)! B
