Dear Howard:

Well, if we are looking for someone that is a great actor that could play any Ripper scenario, I'd have to go with Michael York circa 1970's. He is not incredibly handsome, but has a nice face, and is a great actor. There are few actors that I would hold in such high esteem... and I even forgave him for doing the Austin Powers movies.

He could play the psychotic killer living down the docks or the suave doctor with the top hat and gladstone bag.

Just my opinon, though it is subject to change.

Warm regards,
Divia

Yoy yoy yoy.....Two GREAT choices, already ! I was gonna say Marty Feldman( Igor from Young Frankenstein ).but he would have scared the women to death...There's a guy at work who has Graves Disease and looks like Marty...Nah,we never tease him !!! Here's my choice and I won't switch, although of course anyone else can....Lon Chaney Sr.

Danny Elfman for the music, Dame Judi Dench for either Polly or Dark Annie, Imelda Staunton for the other of THAT pair; Helen Mirren for Liz or Kate; Bob Hoskins for ANY rozzer, Michael York for Anderson, Ralph Fiennes...NOPE JOSEPH Fiennes as the Ripper; Laurence Olivier as Warren (you SAID ANY actor!), and I liked Caine's Abberline, so I have to stick with him. Maybe Jonathon Demme directs....I know I'm missing Kelly, but that one will be as bad as Hitchcock killing Janet Leigh in the first 30 minutes of PSYCHO... any believable suggestions? Maybe Stephen Fry will be thrown in for good measure as, oh hell, I've cast the thing so far...YOU CHOOSE!!!

Cheers to all..how's the weekend going so far?

Leelee Sobieski today would be a great spreeish Mary Jane Kelly. A younger Catherine Hepburn for the complexity of Katherine Eddowes. Linda Evans for the boozy woozy Polly Nichols. Ingrid Bergman as Elizabeth Gustofsdotter Stride. Maureen Stapleton for Annie Chapman. We'll let our English cousins cast Martha Tabram and Robert Anderson--they ought to have something to do with this, I imagine. Donald Sutherland for Donald Sutherland Swanson. John Cleese as Sir Charles Warren.

And as Jack the Ripper as I see him, JN.

David,

You're after a Martha ? Peggy Mount for me.

I'd choose David Jason for Abberline.

Jack ?? Gary Oldman.

Monty Attenborough
:)

PS JN ???? John Noakes ????

Hi David,
Jack Nicholson ( "JN" - I guess ) as JTR would be very demonic.
Klaus Kinski as JTR would be very crazy.
A quiet Armin Mueller Stahl as JTR would be perhaps the most develish.

IMHO

Monty Attenborough: how about your protege,Divia,as maybe one of those English-pub-women-who-sit-by Piano-Joe-and sing to the crowd? But she has to wear leather......I can see people going to THAT kind of film.

More like a comedy for me:

Calista Flockhart as 'Polly Nichols'
Glenn Close as 'Annie Chapman'
Cate Blanchett as 'Elizabeth Stride'
Goldie Hawn as 'Catherine Eddowes'
Gene Wilder as 'John Kelly'
Rachel Weisz as 'Mary Jane Kelly'
Hugh (er,um,er) Grant as 'Joseph Barnett'
Woody Allen as 'Israel Schwartz'
Anthony Hopkins as 'Inspector Abberline'
Dom Deluise as 'Prime Minister Salisbury'
Liam Gallagher (of Oasis and likes a fight) as 'George Lusk'
Bridgette Bardot as 'French prostitute friend of MJK' (or any excuse to get BB in the film)
John Malkovich as 'JACK THE RIPPER'

And if they could be brought back from the dead:
Groucho Marx as 'Charles Warren'
Chico Marx as 'Robert Anderson'
Harpo Marx as 'Donald Swanson'

Dear Monty:

Oh, yeah... Gary Oldman! I love him! He's great at playing psychos, and he could play charming as well. But he's rather tall and lanky. He doesn't quite blend in with the crowd. And I can't quite get his version of Sid Vicious out of my mind.

Now, what's this about Simon leBon?!? *yum*

*smooch*

What a fun thread! David Radka is right on with the casting of Ingrid Bergman as Elizabeth Stride! LOL! I made that comment once myself. However since Ingrid's probably pretty aged by now, she has a daughter (I THINK she's a daughter, niece maybe) named Sandahl who would fit nicely.
Kramer from "Seinfeld" would be a good choice for Israel Schwartz if Larry Fine is unavailable.
I refuse to entertain anyone but Johnny Depp as Abberline, now and forever!
How about Keith Richard of the Rolling Stones making his acting debut as the Ripper?
The lovely Kate Winslow would make a memorable MJK.
"Gene Wilder as John Kelly" - you crack me up, Neal!

Brenda, surely your not suggesting that the lovely Kate Winslet (or Winslow) could play a woman of loose character
No change there then

We can't land Danny Elfman,Brenda....nor Bernard Hermann...Lets ask Simon Owen to do the score.......Divia,the make-up........Warwick could be George Godley. We could not possibly stay under budget,if we had to feed Robbie Coltrane

Brenda,

Sadly, the lovely Ingrid is dead, but her daughter Isabella Rosselini is probably who you are thinking of..she's far too pretty to play ANY of these women.

And because I'm still pissed at that yutz Ted Turner for colorising movies, and am pretty much of a purist when it comes to film, on this one point I must dig my heels in: this is a British story, and it should be played by Brits. I can't see any Yanks in this one. And Johnny Depp is fine as Ichabod Crane or Ed Wood, but Abberline? NEVER!!! Sorry....when I get millions of dollars, and am casting this sucker, Depp will not be in the lineup.

Howard.....WHY can't we land Elfman, and I know Hermann is dead, but why can't we wish? His music is even more scarey than the theme from JAWS, and that scares the crap out of me STILL!

Oh, well, I'm going to bed now, and hope all have a great week. Please let no one be offended by my Depp remarks or any other, for that matter; I apologise for anything I have said that pissed anyone off.The opinions stated here are those of the poster, and are not meant to roil the waters!

Cheers,

Judy

Judy....Depp is a memory, end of story. His "magic pipe',however.ain't...I'll lie to him and tell him to bring the pipe to casting call.then drop the bombshell that he's outta here. I'm trying to save money for the "wrap" party anyway,so thats a good idea....How's this for promo? ....a billboard with a puzzled and scared looking Larry Fine,,looking over at Hugh Grant offering some grapes to one of our soon-to-be-decided-through-Monty's-casting-couch-proving-grounds-female leads, under a gaslight.?

Are you referring to a new documentary that's being made?

Regarding casting for a new movie, how about this: HASSELHOF.

Divia,

That's too bad, because Charo is on record as saying she won't do the movie unless Hasselhoff's in it. Ah, well.

Timsta,
Mansfield would need a very good agent to get him back to work these days, wouldn't he?

Cheers,
Dave

Well, if you are going to drag Charo into this, you might as well bring Charles Nelson Reilly in to play Queen Victoria.

And Paul Lynde, as usual, will be in the center square....

I see Rod Serling playing the Ripper. Arthur Treacher as Abberline (although Michael Caine was very good).I'd have Swanson played by Ringo Starr and Sir Charles Warren would be played by Fred McMurray. Hutchinson would be Benny Hill. My award winning pick is Ed Wynn as Baxter.

"Under the Milky Way" by The Church would be the theme song.

A Movie,

You must all be patient. A new film is on the way.
It will be putting up a suspect, that no one, I repeat no one, has ever heard of.

It is a film made by experts for experts.

It will be unique.

"It will be unique..." HA !!! Unique as in having Charles Nelson Reilly ( Divia,my bosses name is Charles Reilly ! So this flick/epic has got destiny on its side.) as Queen Vic ? Unique as having Woody Allen playing Israel Schwartz ? Or our own Warwick Parminster as George Godley? I THINK NOT !! So what if we haven't gotten to the task of selecting a Ripper....or even having a plot ? I may have to take someones ass to court..... But seriously,Andy & Sue,when approximately will it come out? And don't tell me it has Larry Fine as the Ripper !!!!

Hi all,

I'd vote for Richard O'Brien to play JTR - anyone who has seen him in Rocky Horror, or Robin of Sherwood, or most recently as the Child Catcher in the stage version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will know that the guy is pure evil....
