Hello all,

Most of you have probably read of the upcoming pseudo-Ripper film 'Bad Karma'. Well, it was released to American home video 7/23 with its title changed to 'Hell's Gate' (making it the third Ripper film in a year to have the word 'hell' in the title!). This film, which takes place in the present day, plays off one of the silliest premises I've ever seen: A young girl is abducted by a gas station attendant who performs shock therapy on her to remind her of her past life as Agnes, an East End trollop. His methods manage to succeed before she escapes and kills him. Flash ahead 10 years and the girl, Maureen Hatcher (Patsy Kensit paying the rent with this role), is now a patient in a mental institution. She still believes that she is the whore Agnes and that her doctor (Patrick Muldoon catching up on bills here)is her old lover, and none other than Jack the Ripper! Well, he goes on vacation with his wife and daughter, Maureen/Agnes escapes and follows them, leaving a trail of bodies in her wake.
We learn from an all-too-few series of Whitechapel flashbacks that Jack the Ripper was able to avoid capture because 'Agnes', acting as a frightened prostitute, would send the bobbies in the wrong direction. Agnes herself brought the Ripper's bloody reign to an end when, in a jealous rage, she burnt him alive in the fireplace he had used as a hiding place. Oh yes, and the reason he stole organs was for some unknown metaphysical purpose!
Two of the films highlights include the good doctor's wife (played by Amy Locane, who was probably lucky to get this role!), who certaintly didn't miss her calling as a detective, remarking to the obviously British Kensit, following a long conversation, that she 'detected a hint of an accent' and inquired if Kensit was from somewhere else! The best moment, however, is when a van goes over a cliff and manages to burst into flames long before the impact!
As the video store where I picked this up only carried the VHS version, I am not certain if any 'extras' appear on the DVD. If there are, it is in my humble opinion that there should have been many more 'deleted scenes'!

Yours truly,

Tom Wescott

Dear Tom:

Thanks for giving the plot away. At least now I know what I'm missing.

The Sunday edition of The Observer, 28/7/02, page 9 has printed a half page story on Jack the Ripper. The story is in relation to Robert Donston Stephenson and my research.Certain mistakes have appeared in the story which are as follows:

It states that all the victims were killed within a 500-yard radius.
Only 3 victims were killed in such a manner.

The article states that kidneys were removed from the victims when in fact only one kidney was removed from a victim.

It was stated that Stephenson and his wife made what money they could through Stephenson's writing on the occult, which included One Who Knows and Tautriadelta. This is not true.

It was also incorrectly stated that a dismembered body was found in a river near the Stephenson's Brighton Home.
The victim was in fact found in the Regents canal and the Thames.

The story concludes that the Patristic Gospels continued to explore Stephenson's obsession with Black Magic.
The Patristic Gospels do not relate to Black Magic.

The moral of this post is dont believe all you read in the national newspapers.

Dear Ivor:

It also goes to show you that people will bend the facts to fit the story or to create sensationalism.

Warm regards,
Divia

Hi Divia, Yes I quite agree in fact as far as sensationalism is concerned the tabloids of today are far worse in this respect than they were in 1888.They appear to have it down to a fine art in this day and age.The lies which they printed for sheer sensationalism in relation to the murder case of James Bulger for example was an utter disgrace. How they never landed in court over the issue I will never understand.
