I've just been browsing the fiction section of Ripper Media, and I was surprised to note that there's no record of what (I think) is a really fine collection of Ripper-related short stories.

It's 'Jack the Ripper' (384pp) edited by Susan Casper and Gardner Dozois with a foreword by Robert Bloch, and published by Futura in 1988 to coincide with the centenary. It includes nineteen short stories such as 'Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper' by Bloch, 'The Prowler in the City at the Edge of the World' by Harlan Ellison, 'Game in the Pope's Head' by Gene Wolfe and 'My Shadow is the Fog' by Charles L. Grant.

The styles range from supernatural horror to comedy. Settings include historical, present day and futuristic. Some of the best stories in the book are 'Anna and the Ripper of Siam' by S.P. Somtow, which is very funny in a morbid sort of way, and the disturbing 'Knucklebones' by Tim Sullivan in which a psycopathic American teenager recreates the Ripper murders.

The complete listing is as follows:
Foreword by Robert Bloch
'Jack's Decline' by Lucius Shepard
'Gentlemen of the Shade' by Harry Turtledove
'Dead Air' by Gregory Nicoll
'Street of Dreams' by John M Ford
'Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper' by Robert Bloch
'Anna and the Ripper of Siam' by S. P. Somtow
'The Edge' by Pat Cadigan
'An Awareness of Angels' by Karl Edward Wagner
'Old Red Shoes' by Stephen Gallagher
'From Hell, Again' by Gregory Frost
'Spring-Fingered Jack' by Susan Casper
'The Sins of the Fathers' by Scott Baker
'A Good Night's Work' by Sarah Clemens
'Knucklebones' by Tim Sullivan
'The Prowler in the City at the Edge of the World' by Harlan Ellison
'The Lodge of Jahbulon' by Cooper McLaughlin
'Game in the Pope's Head' by Gene Wolfe
'My Shadow is the Fog' by Charles L. Grant
and
'Love in Vain' by Lewis Shiner.

If you can get your hands on it, this is certainly a worthwhile addition to a Ripper books collection. However, I imagine it's long been out of print.

Matt
