Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Media: Specific Titles: Television (Non-Fiction): The Trial of Jack the Ripper (UK, 2002)

From my friend Geoff in the UK: There was program on the Discovery (Europe) channel last week which was a Trial of Jack the Ripper. I don't know if it would be available in the United States as well. A couple of contributors I recognise from the Ripper mags you sent to me were on the program and also Jeremy Beadle. Angela Rippon presented the case for one suspect but was far too aggressive and not too well informed. But Jeremy carried the day. Both the audience and the viewers voted for his option - Maybrick. I think it was the diary and the engraved watch and Beadle's presentation which carried the day for the diary. The professional lawyers who made up the other two contenders were as unconvincing as Rippon was aggressive.

I remember this if only because of it's inept approach. If I remember correctly each advocate had ten minutes to put their case. Maybrick won because there was some tangible 'evidence' and it fitted neatly into the ten minute allocation. With the others, evidence necessary to support the claim is not of the kind to be trotted off in ten minutes yet if presented properly would be just as compelling. Admittedly, like all TV offerings, the producers would be limited for time but you cannot do justice for ANY given suspect in ten minutes. Good entertainment I'm sure but not a true reflection of the state of the evidence as it stands.
