Hello,

Thought this might be interesting. Got this still from the new From Hell movie starring Johnny Depp. I do not know how authentic it is, but it is not a bad atmospheric picture if it is from the film. Image courtesy SBCB.

IGN FilmForce and IGN movies have uncovered some more information about the upcoming From Hell movie including a script review.

But first, for those unaware, Amazon.co.uk is taking pre-orders on the soon to be re-released video of the Jack the Ripper mini-series starring Michael Caine.

Also Fox put up the movie site at http://www.fromhellmovie.com but it doesn't yet contain any information as of now.

Having read the stuff at IGN I personally feel Ripperologists will have a field day with this one and appears to be an all-time low for Johnny Depp.

It's once again the Sickert story with Gull and an unknown murderer called McQueen, Abberline is psychically gifted(a la Lees), uses opium and falls in love with Mary Kelly.

Well, you have to read it for yourself at: http://filmforce.ign.com/news/1342.html and http://movies.ign.com/news/3427.html

Hello,

Thought this might of interest if some of you do not know the release dates for the forthcoming film.

• USA 28 September 2001
• Australia 25 October 2001
• Belgium 31 October 2001
• Netherlands 22 November 2001

I presume the UK release will be sometime around November.

Just in case you didn't know and where interested, 'From Hell' is being directed by the Hughes brothers. They are the young brothers (figuritively and literally) who broke onto the scene with 1993's awesome gangsta movie 'Menace II Society' and followed it up a couple of years later with the sophomore effort 'Dead Presidents', which seemed to miss the mark with audiences, although it wasn't that bad of a movie. It's main drawback was it's pacing. As the Hughes brothers are black their first two films reflected this world, and I thought it was rather interesting and cool when I read they would be making a Jack the Ripper movie. They wanted to make something the completely opposite of what people expected from them, which kicks ass, as long as they don't screw it up. My only fear is that they're doing this film for an ego-trip and shock value and don't really care about the content. That's probably not a valid fear, though, considering the care they put into the casting. Johnny Depp is awesome (even if some think he is far too young, slender, and handsome to be playing Abberline). Heather Graham doesn't do anything for me, but at least they didn't cast that blonde chick from 'There's Something About Mary'. The sets also look great in the photos I've seen. The Hughes brothers seem to have gone all out to capture a gothic/victorian feel. My only regret, film-wise, is that they never made the 'Diary' movie with Anthony Hopkins. Not for the sake of the 'Diary', of course, but just to see Hopkins play Jack. It couldn't get any better than that! September is going to be a good Ripper month here in the states with 'From Hell' and Evans and Skinners 'Letters From Hell' book coming out, as well as new issues of 'Ripperologist' and 'Ripper Notes' of course!! It sucks that so many of you will have to wait until Nov/Dec to see the film. I promise I won't reveal the ending. Of course, I believe Ripperologist already revealed the 'actual' ending (shame on you!) but I'm referring to the identity they put forward as Jack.

Yours truly,

Tom Wescott

Hi Tom
SPOILER COMING: Yes, we did reveal whodunnit but it's an old theory and as soon as the character's name appeared the secret would have been out, also the movie is based on a graphic novel so revealing the end didn't seem to matter. Of course, maybe the film-makers have put a real twist in the tail and it won't be him at all!

There are a couple of other Ripper movies dur for release, including Jack the Ripper: Letter from Hell and Bad Karma on which I'd appreciate additional information if anyone has it. (email editor_ripperologist@yahoo.com) Jack also appears in Monkeybone.

From Hell: NME.Com confirmed in May that Marilyn Manson would be involved in the "From Hell" musical score, now he's gone into more detail about his involvement: "What happened was they had hired a conventional composer who did most of the work, and I had come to the project late. They wanted me to lend my aesthetic; they were trying to get him to compose conventional music, but with, as if he were me. And then I met them and they were, 'Oh, we wish we had got you from the beginning'... So what I did was I took thing they already had and I changed them slightly and I added a lot of sounds that didn't distract from the film but make things more intense, whatever they're trying to achieve. And that was really enjoyable for me". Manson will also record a song for the closing credits of the film. Thanks to 'Jez'.

Depp on Jack the Ripper's trail

depp

Actor Johnny Depp has toured the London East End haunts of Jack the Ripper as research for his new film role.

The actor went unrecognised by fans on his two-hour tour, and he was accompanied by Ripper expert and ex-policeman Donald Rumbelow.

The pair rounded off the tour with a stop in The Ten Bells Pub, where one of the Ripper's victims used to enjoy a drink.

In the film From Hell, Depp plays Inspector Frederick Abberline, a drug-addicted police inspector desperately trying to catch the killer who terrorised London in 1888.

"A few people gave us a second look but probably assumed he was a lookalike," Mr Rumbelow told the News of the World magazine.

He said he was impressed by the depth of the actor's knowledge on the subject.

"He's one of the best-informed people I've guided.

"He's intelligent, easy to get on with, genuinely nice. He'd read my book, which was flattering."

The star visited the site of the Frying Pan pub in Brick Lane and asked to see the doorway where the Ripper wrote a message after one of his murders.

A spokesman for The Ten Bells said of Depp: "He was a really nice bloke, very friendly. He had a couple of halves of lager and talked about the Ripper. He knew his stuff."
