A couple of years back, my brother told me of a story he read in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine--he read it in the bookstore so did not buy--withe the conceit that Holmes was the Ripper but for the highest possible motives. Seems that the facts behind The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire were heavily rewritten by Watson. In the process of defeating this "vampire", Holmes learned that it was really an alien survivor of that other Victorian nightmare, Wells' "War of the Worlds". Though the Martian managed somehow to survive the microbes which destroyed his kind, he had been circulating among the prostitutes of Whitechapel raping them in an attemptt to crossbreed and insure a foothold in this world. Holmes found the names of each of these women and felt it his horrible duty to dispatch them brutally, the mutilations insuring the death of any alien changelings which might have been produced. When he dispatched the last of these wretched victims, Jack disappeared as Holmes returned to his extraordinary but otherwise more acceptable business. I want to read this story but have no idea what it is. Has it been anthologized anywhere? Thanks in advance. I'll check back here or you can reach me at phmooney@freewwweb.com

Pat -

I've never heard of such a story (admittedly, SF isn't my line of country), but I would be interested in knowing what the story and author are, as both JTR and the Master are enthusiasms of mine.

Incidentally, Sherlock-Holmes-as-Jack-the-Ripper is also the plot of Michael Dibdin's 1978 novel "The Last Sherlock Holmes Story." In it, Holmes is revealed not only as the Ripper but also as Professor Moriarty, as he is apparently schizophrenic. At the end, Holmes seemingly comes to his senses and throws himself off of Reichenbach Falls. Not my cup of tea, but I know many people who do like the book.

Hi, Pat H. Mooney:

Like CMD I also do not know the story you mention, but then again as with Christopher-Michael, sci fi is not my usual "bag." You might be advised to contact Andy Aliffe who is interested in different Ripper connections that have appeared through the years. He may know of the story on Holmes as Jack the Ripper that you mentioned. You can contact Andy at andy@aliffe.freeserve.co.uk. I would also think that some Holmes afficianados may have been upset at the story and wonder if there were not letters to the editor after the publication of the story??? Another possibility is that the magazine "Ripperologist" has been making a collection of different mentions of the Ripper in literature and the media and often features such in its pages. You can contact the editor Paul Daniel at paul.daniel@virgin.net. Paul may well be able to help you with this enquiry. Good luck!

Best regards

Chris George

Sounds like a great story. If you can remember anything like a title or author name you can search the site archive for Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine at:

http://www.asimovs.com/

You could also try writing them or leaving a note on their reader message boards.
Don't forget to let us know the answer!
