Gotham by Gaslight Part of the Batman Comics Series DC Comics, 1989 $3.95 This may sound dumb, but one of the best Jack the Ripper stories I ever read was "Gotham by Gaslight", a Batman comic book published in 1989. It was a story that took place in another timeline, where Bruce Wayne existed during the time of the Ripper murders in 1888, then has to don the cowl and cape of "Bat-Man" to bring an end to the Ripper as he arrives in Gotham City. It's a real fun read. Just a little suggestion.

Here are 3 further Ripper comics you might not know: 'Blood of the innocent'(Warp Graphics, 1985); in which the Ripper(Prince Eddy;protected by Sir William Gull and J.K. Stephen) encounters Dracula, who has fallen in love with Mary Kelly. Druitt is around as well; going insane after being faced with the vampire! This is actually better than it sounds.... Then there's a Spanish comic; 'Jack the Ripper'(1991), also published in Dutch, which consists of several short stories focusing on the macabre side of the murders and 19th century London. And there's a French comic, also published in Dutch, called 'Jack the Ripper'(1990's), which is part of a Sherlock Holmes series and has Holmes investigating the Whitechapel murders again..

Oh yes, Gotham by Gaslight. Very, very hard to find right now, that's why I lend mine out to Batman fans for a small deposit (refundable of course). It does have an excellent forward by PSYCHO'S Robert Bloch. But the concept of Batman and Jack the Ripper being joined together is so poetically done. The artwork is average, not the best I've seen, but then again not the very worst I've seen. If any comic book fan out there can find a copy then I suggest you do, at once. Have you done it ? No ? Why not ? Don't just sit there reading this load of old codswallop, go out and find how good it is for yourselves. Hell, give me an address and a deposit and I'll lend it too you myself if that's what it takes. Tris
