Jack the Ripper stalks again...
There may be no more fascinating character in the history of true crime than Jack the Ripper. Although his murders of 1888 were heinous, he is by no means the worst of the lot when it comes to serial killers. And yet, when the term "serial killer" is mentioned, thoughts automatically turn to Jack the Ripper. Why so? I believe the answer is three-fold, as does my hero, Scotland Yard Detective Inspector Jonathan Blake: First is the nature of the crime itself. Never before in recorded history had anyone killed in such a cold-blooded manner, completely without motive. The second reason is the sensational media of the day, which made the most of the killer's catchy self-assigned name, "Jack the Ripper," and created an instant media star. The third reason is that he was never caught, not even identified. Because of this on-going mystery, he has been the subject of countless books, movies and TV shows, including my own, "Bloodline." I submit that in the mind of contemporary culture, he remains popular and always will, for he has become the symbol for the dark side in all of us. "Ripperologists," those folk who love to study the case, continue to debate the identity of the Ripper, but dear reader, if you read "Bloodline," you'll know the truth! :-)
