Casebook Message Boards: Police Officials: Police Officials: Inspector Abberline's grave

Hello Everybody, I’ve just heard that the London Metropolitan Police have recently been in touch with Bournemouth Council regarding erecting a permanent stone memorial on Abberline’s grave. I understand that Arthur, one of the two retired Metropolitan Police officers responsible for the cleanup of the grave site last Autumn, has been asked to look for (and get the prices of) a suitable stone, etc. Apparently, some people have expressed a fear that if the memorial carries the word ‘Police’, some mindless character will desecrate the site - a sign of the times in which we live, I’m afraid. To avoid this potential problem, thought is being given to the displaying of the Victorian Metropolitan Police crest, minus the title. I understand that ‘Portland Stone’ and/or granite is/are favoured for the memorial itself. But, please do remember that these issues are presently only under initial consideration. There is a long, long way to go yet (a statement based in part on my own dealings with Bournemouth Council!). Regards to all, Robin

Hi all, This morning I finally managed to visit Insp. Frederick Abberline's grave at Wimborne Road Cemetery, Bournemouth. Sadly, the Rosemary bush that was planted in memory of the Inspector in September 2001 (as part of the Ripper Conference, etc.) has not survived. My wife, Sonia, and I will be replacing it as soon as we can. Sonia has proverbial green fingers so the replacement plant should do well. Still no news on the formal headstone expected to be funded by the Metropolitan Police and others. My retired Met. Police officer friend has kindly offered to find out what is happening. I'll post the update as soon as I receive it. Regards to you all, Robin
