I don't know of a website devoted to Abberline myself. Have you researched him on the main Casebook under the Police Officials section? Ally

i have researched the information on the main casebook and it does not give into all the detail that i am looking for. i wanted to know more onto his personal life. Like did he have any kids. What happened wife. In the recent movie from hell it show him going to these drug housing and such and i was wondering if he did go to these places. i was also wondering how he died. for in the movie it show him as drug overdose. i have been only doing research on the ripper case for about a month and a half. so i went to see the movie to see how the would put things. i aslo like comparing what they added to the story and what is factual.but i am interested in abberline for the fact that there is so little known about him and he pladed such a big part in the case. aslo was he a physic. did he actually see the murders before they happened. also did he have an affair with mary kelly. there is soo much more that i am wonering so that i why i ask the question of where can i find the info on abberline......tell me what you think.....email me..thx

Short and simple: Everything about Abberline in the movie was bogus...complete fabrication and totally untrue. No drugs, no affair with Mary, no psychic BS. Ally

Hi, Kandy: Well.... Physically, Robbie Coltrane would have been better as Abberline... though Michael Caine in the 1988 film was a good likeness too! I believe you asked about Inspector Abberline's career after the Whitechapel murders. He did *not* OD or go round the bend with hallucinations. He was the top detective a year later during the investigation into the Cleveland Street scandal but he retired from the Metropolitan Police in 1892 and took a job as head of Pinkerton's Detective Agency in Monte Carlo. There is a reminiscence by Abberline about his time in Monte Carlo in the latest issue of Ripperologist. Look at the bio on him on this site at http://www.casebook.org/police_officials/po-abber.html. He died in 1929 in retirement in Bournemouth and his wife I understand outlived him for two years. They had no children. Best regards Chris George

First, I'd like to thank everyone for their insightfull comments and wonderful exchange of dialogue. They have really helped to point me in new directions with my own fascination and research with JTR. Second, as a prosecutor, I'd like to make the comment that I am exceedingly glad that I would not have to prosecute any of the police suspects in this case. It would be a nightmare for any prosecutor in such a high profile case. In fact, my latest research (strictly a hobby mind you) deals with a prosecutorial analysis of each of the suspects, but this will take some time to complete. Third, FROM HELL is an absolute disgrace and is a mockery of the facts in this case. I also felt it did a great disservice to Abberline. That's all for now, please keep up the exciting exchange of ideas and I look forward to reading your comments.

Hi, Scott: Thanks for your input. We look forward to hearing more of your views on the case. If you do not know about it, you might also be interested in coming to the Ripper Weekend to be held in Baltimore April 19-21, 2002. For more information go to http://www.casebook-productions.org/. Among the features of the weekend, along with a talk by the redoubtable Donald Rumbelow, will be a presentation by Andy Aliffe on Inspector Abberline. By the way, I agree with you that the portrayal of Abberline in movies--both the Caine movie where he was shown as an alcoholic and the one with Depp, even worse, as a drug addict!--is deplorable!!!! Best regards Chris George

Hi Christopher, the first Mrs Abberline (Martha) died in 1868, two months after marrying Fred. The second Mrs Abberline (Emma) died in 1930 after being married to him since 1876. Michael Caine was a good Abberline, but...he was married and if researchers can be trusted NEVER drank alcohol or touched drugs. Yours Philip

Hello Chris, Thank you for the kind information on the Ripper Weekend next April. I've never heard Rumbelow in person, so that would be a real treat. If the criminals will just take a break for one weekend, I'll definitely be there! Best wishes, Scott

Hi, John: My sentence may have been badly constructed ("O deathly intercourse of English grammar!!!!") but what I meant was that it was bad enough to portray Abberline as a falling-down drunk who had to sleep it off in the cells (the 1988 Michael Caine film) but it is even worse to show him as a drug addict who uses visions to solve the murders (Depp's flick)!!! What about the historical truth? Isn't the historical Abberline interesting enough? Hi, Philip: Thank you so much for providing the information on Abberline's first wife. I appreciate it. Do you mean then that in his later years with Pinkerton's in Monaco, Fred never smoked "Monte Carlo Gold"? Hi, Scott: I certainly hope the Austin miscreants behave themselves long enough to enable you to make it to the April 2002 Ripper weekend in Baltimore. We have hopes that in addition to Donald Rumbelow, Paul Begg and other members of the UK Cloak and Dagger Club will be there plus one or two other big names! Best regards Chris George Casebook Productions http://www.casebook-productions.org/
