Merry Christmas Everyone, I'm sorry it's a bit early, but the thing is I'm cutting back a bit this year. For those of you expecting a card, I'm afraid this is it. I don't want to bore you with my Micawberesque situation, suffice to say I will not be spending 6 million dollars on a turkey this year. Jim
| |
Author: Garry Ross Saturday, 02 November 2002 - 08:12 pm
Jim, you could always do what I do in these situations. Get some glitter, some coloured pens, some paper glue and plain card. Fold the card into..ahem...a card shape (great instructions eh?) then put some glue round the edges and sprinkle with glitter...easy does it though as you may want to make more than one. Then with the coloured pens write a line in a different colour to make it all nice and cheery... Money's short Time's are hard Here's your f****** Christmas card I'm sure that your elderly relatives will be especially pleased to receive such a lovely gesture take care Garry btw, it could also be used for all occasions!

Wood, As Mason Verger once said........."would I ??!!!" Seeing as I am trying to avoid all things Cornwell I do not know when...so when ??? Mail me at work after the weekend (we got massage parlours then ) and we shall arrange something out of nothing....sounds like a book I once read ! Papa Monty

Author: Peter Wood Saturday, 16 November 2002 - 10:01 am
Awight Papa Monty, I'll e mail you at work after the weekend. Don't avoid it, why don't you just come along for the craic? Peter
| |
Author: Andy & Sue Parlour Saturday, 16 November 2002 - 03:20 pm
Hello Monty and Peter, Forgive me for butting in your little chat. But I notice in your last post Monty that you mention the Parlours. We have world-wide copyright on the name i.e. massage, funeral, ice cream and Raymond at the Arsenal, etc, etc. If you mention it again you could be facing a hefty bill or be liable to a good horse whipping, Even worse, forced to watch the latest JTR film on your own, and tead to the seat.
| |
Author: Peter Wood Sunday, 17 November 2002 - 08:17 am
The horse whipping sounds good, but I could not sit through that pile of horse sh** that passed for a film (From Hell, I mean - not anything else that may have come out since). Hey Andy, how are you doing? How are you going to feel when Man U snap up Alan Smith, thus securing the premiership title?
| |
Author: Andy & Sue Parlour Monday, 18 November 2002 - 05:37 am
Hello Peter, Yes Alan Smith is what we call a good old fashioned ENGLISH centre forward. But he must learn he can only score goals when on the pitch, not sitting on the bench suspended. Sir Alex is probably the only manager that will sort him out. Meanwhile Whinger Wenger will go out and sign some more foreigners. When we went up to Highbury last year we might just as well been sitting in family enclosure at the Stade de Paris!
| |
Author: Peter Wood Monday, 18 November 2002 - 02:26 pm
Maybe we could palm them off with Veron in part exchange? The question is: How much money do you think we would have to give them? Then we could sign Chris Kirkland, or Buffon, a proper central defender in the mould of Tony Adams, a versatile midfielder and ... Oh, but I'm dreaming of the good ol' days, eight titles in eleven years! Cheers Andy Peter.

Hi, all! Looks like we are going to get eight inches of snow here in Baltimore today, and I am home, instead of having to go by train to D.C. having known last night that the blizzard was on the way. So it's nice to just look out and watch it fall! All the best Chris

Author: Howard Brown Thursday, 05 December 2002 - 05:02 pm
Chris....I hear you,buddy....There's a really nice view of US 76 by my place and there were very few people driving out there this morning....Shoveling out,now thats another story !! Philly has more row homes than any city in the world and more unique "spot savers" to boot....old kitchen sinks..wrapped tree branches...aluminum ducts....flags mounted in orange cones.....all illegal but funny to see....Watch out for the snowballs,C.G. !!!!

Author: Ally Thursday, 05 December 2002 - 07:16 pm
4 day weekend for me!! Woo hoo. Although I shoveled my first driveway today and snow is starting to lose its appeal. On the other hand the demon dogs have been reveling in it all day and are really cute. Toasty fire, smores and doctored egg nog.... ahhhh

Hi, Ally and Howard: Luckily Donna and I have an underground parking space at the apartment building across the street so we don't have to dig out, woo hoo, best investment we ever made. I am going to call work at 7:00 AM in the morning to see if they will be open... I hope they won't be then I won't have to make the trek to D.C. By the way I hope things are settling down on the Sickert and Cornwell board. All the best Chris

You know you guys are really lucky having snow at all. We don't get any, except maybe once every ten years, then it's around March time. All the Christmas cards depict quaint little snowy scenes, but the best we can hope for is some drizzle and a bit of black ice. Right, here's some advance notice for you: My wedding anniversary on 21st December 2002. My 36th birthday on 29 December 2002. All greetings and congratulations gratefully received at van.nistelrooy@ntlworld.com cheers Peter

Hi, This is not a holiday but a day of remembrance for the U.S. as it was 61 years ago Pearl Harbor was bombed. I still think of the 900 men trapped in the "Arizona" as their coffin. At least we got involved in the war. But what a loss for us and it shouldn't be forgotten. Thanks, Paula

Ally So we've finally found something in common? We're both Capricorn? I'm mostly the grumpiest b*****d in the world on my birthdays - nothings ever good enough, can't wait to get them over with, so don't worry about people buying me presents - you just enjoy that bar of Lindt all to yourself! David O - now there's interesting news! The surprises just keep on coming ... Did you all get that "one present for two occasions" thing when you were younger? You know the one, where Aunty Ethel, or whatever you call her, would say "There's your present, it's a joint Christmas and birthday present". I got my own back on all the people who did that. All those who had birthdays in July would be given a box of chocolates with the words "There's your present, it's a joint Christmas and birthday present". I need therapy. Peter

Fraid not Peter, I'm a Sagitarius. All the good days in December were Sag, the leftovers are Capricorns.
| |
Author: David O'Flaherty Sunday, 08 December 2002 - 09:44 am
Peter, Absolutely I get stiffed for presents, it's the worst time for birthdays, isn't it? I can't get anyone to do anything on mine, because everybody's resting up for New Year's Eve (grrr) We may have to start up a support group. But just how far apart are we? I was born 4:44 am the 30th, which I think is 10:44 am your time (England's six hours ahead, right?). Ally, which day is your birthday? Dave
| |
Author: Ally Sunday, 08 December 2002 - 11:43 am
I was born on 12/12. I was lucky that my mother was a prize shopoholic so I can't say as I ever got stiffed on the presents. Also because my brother (who had the good fortune present-wise to be born in July) would have been sure to count them up and tell me if he had gotten more. So I had a present-full month. Although it was hard finding enough stuff I actually wanted to make for two gift days. Ally

Author: Harry Mann Monday, 09 December 2002 - 03:44 am
Peter When you get to my age,you have a birthday every month ,just in case.My official was last month, but you can send a present retrospectively. Ally can send one posthumously. only joking so no wreaths.

Author: Peter Wood Monday, 09 December 2002 - 01:24 pm
Oh Ally! My dad's a Sagittarius (22nd December), born on the cusp - so I know what they're like. David: The support group is a great idea, but I'm afraid I have no real idea of what time I was born at. Harry: Once again your humour excels! Birthdays aren't kind to me, I couldn't handle one a month. Monty: Who dug you up? Get your shoes off and get back in that kitchen. Most people say I look 29, are you calling them liars?!!!! Ever youthful Peter

Hi Peter: Big month for you and the Red Devils, eh? Enjoy your cake while you can, Mate! P.S. My New Year's Resolutions are to read a mss. by P. Wood and to celebrate G. Houllier as manager of the season. P.P.S. I just got a fortune cookie that read inside, "A financial investment will yield returns beyond your wildest hopes."

Big up John Hacker and a very happy birthday to you! My little boy was 5 today, a very big milestone. He got "Hotwheels Octoblast" and lots of other cool stuff that I can neither put together nor play with. Chris: I've had a look at the fixture list for the next ten games. Arsenal and Liverpool play each other twice in the space of four weeks - whilst ours is an easy run in. My prediction? End of January - Man Utd 9 points clear and James Maybrick to be confirmed as Jack the Ripper. Rip Rip Peter

A very happy birthday and a Merry Christmas to all of you that have them (and some mothers do 'ave 'em) and celebrate them. Nothing here in Massachusetts except cold winds. Maybe snow for Christmas Day, but who can tell? No matter - I've got a refrigerator full of champagne that's calling my name, begging me to drink up. So cheers to you all! BTW - since we're doing birthdays in advance, my 40th is on February 17. Anyone wondering what to get me should look over at my Christmas wish on the 'Galdstone Bag' thread. Either that, or subscribe to Ripper Notes so that I can buy the airline ticket and travelling companion I want.

Hi everybody, I got Cornwell's book for Christmas. From my sister-in-law. Which leaves me with two questions: 1. Why does she hate me? :-) 2. As much as I know, the only JTR-books that have been published in German are Harrison's diary and Cornwell's Sickert. WHY? No Begg, no Evans, no Fido, no Sudgen, no younamehim. Looks like all the decent stuff is written for a minority and as such it isn't worth it to be translated. Best wishes Christian

Brave Nude World We're hurtling into the new Millenium, naked like the featherless chicken, a broiler bird bred by a genetics prof to climb into the stockpot. Military geeks have designed drones to battle for us, to blow up our enemy as he drives between oases--they've devised the new Christmas Star, or they'll send ratbots to sneak the disease to his den. With a remote-controlled backpack plugged into their brain, ratbots will kill him in his lair. Soon we'll be brainwashed tots on a diet of vitamins and honey, happy as a bunny, test-tube bred, red-eyed and nude, without a care. Christopher T. George Featherless Chicken (NYT Magazine Article) Depressing as all this sounds, I really don't think it's too far away. All the possibilities I touch upon were discussed in the New York Times Magazine's "2nd Annual Year in Ideas Issue" on December 15, 2002--link above to the Featherless Chicken story that was one of a number of frightening prospects catalogued in the issue. And as you may have heard, a few weeks ago, the U.S. actually did blow up some suspected El Queda leaders in Yemen using an unmanned drone as they drove between destinations in the desert. So the frightening new Millenium that I describe is already here. On a more pleasant note, Santa was good to me, bringing me The News from Whitechapel: Jack the Ripper in The Daily Telegraph by Messrs. Alexander Chisholm, Christopher-Michael DiGrazia, and Dave Yost, which I highly recommend as a source of documentary information on the Whitechapel murders, and a wonderful companion volume to the equally indispensible The Ultimate Jack the Ripper Sourcebook by Stewart P. Evans and Keith Skinner. I hope your holidays are going well. All the best Chris

Chris and all, The Wall Street Journal ran a very, very interesting story about Al-Queda in Yemen last week. I'd post a link, but their web journal requires a subscription. However, I can email the story to anyone who'd like to read it--just send a message to the address in my profile. WSJ's policy states that they won't spam your inbox or sell your email address. Cheers, Dave
