Have had a little more time this week to follow Casebook discussions and would like to discuss the case with people. So if anybody's up for it I'll be in the chatroom for the next 1.5 hours or so. (It's 23:15 pm here in London, so 18:15 New York time and 00:15 Western European time). But do be warned, have encountered a few problems getting into the room.
Regards, V.

Join us in chat tomorrow night at 8 PM CST for "Trades of All Jacks".

Was JTR a doctor? A sailor? A butcher? A morgue attendant? A fish porter? An upholsterer? A cobbler? A knife collector? Join us in chat as we discuss what trade - and/or hobby - our boy Jack might have had to facilitate his status as history's most infamous serial killer.

Tim,
I've been trying to access the chat room since this afternoon with no luck. The server seems to be down. I have tried the Java chat as well as mIRC with no success. You may be forced to use that backup server and ask folks to use mIRC pr pIRCh to connect if the problem is still with us tomorrow. The IRC commands would be:
/server linkline.ca.us.webchat.org 6667
/join #theJTRChatroom
As when we had to use that one before, there wouldn't be any Ops available because it isn't really our usual one.

Like the man said, the chat room is down and will likely not be available for the scheduled chat tonight.

If not, then the scheduled chat "Trades of All Jacks" will be postponed.

The chat room administrator says that the chat server is down, and for no telling how long. While diehards could do as Vila suggests, there is no way to get the horde of Java chatters in there as well.

The server may be operational by this evening, however, in which case we will proceed as planned. If so, then

Join us in chat tonight at 8 PM CST for "Trades of All Jacks".

Hello everyone,
It turns out that I misremembered my work schedule again and don't have to go to work this week until Wed. night. I will be online until midnight EST (taking out time for meals, of course) if anyone wants to ask me questions about setting up mIRC to work around the chat server problems. Feel free to e-mail me at vila@america.net if you wish. I can't claim to know *everything* about IRC programs, but I am willing to share all I know.
My e-mail downloads new messages every 10 minutes, so the turnaround time for me to send answers should be bearable to all. Let's not allow a few server problems to kill the chat this week, OK?
Free downloads of mIRC can be had at http://www.mirc.com and the program is very small (3.23 MEGs), so hard drive space should not be a bother for anyone.

Your friendly neighborhood high-tech redneck,

OK friends,
Listen up. The Java chat is down because the regular server has crashed. Grahf has tried to re-direct it to the webchat network where we have an emergency chat room open, but it won't work. It looks as if an IRC program is the only way to chat tonight.
If you want to chat and have mIRC or pIRCh, or even some other dedicated chat program to access IRC networks with, here are the commands:
/server linkline.ca.us.webchat.org 6667
Then once you connect:
/join #theJTRChatroom
Tim, Ally, grahf, and I are in the emergency chat room now. SteveL almost made it in but vanished before he actually got to the chat room, and Brad checked in before he went out to dinner.
Give it a go, folks. It beats not chatting!

Well, there is good news and bad news regarding the chat room.

The good news is that the server did NOT crash after all - its administrators merely changed its address again, this time without posting any notification. All mIRC users please note the NEW (old) address:

CHAT.PLANETZ.NET

The bad news is that the java link has been edited to reflect the now-erroneous address and will have to be modified by the administrator before any java chatters may join us. I hope to have this completed before next Tuesday.

Having said all that, I invite you to join us in chat next Tuesday night at 8 PM CST for "Trades of All Jacks".

Was JTR a doctor? A sailor? A butcher? A morgue attendant? A fish porter? An upholsterer? A cobbler? A knife collector? A sportsman? A slaughterman? A scissors-grinder? Join us in chat as we discuss what trade - and/or hobby - our boy Jack might have had to facilitate his status as history's most infamous serial killer.

Mark your calendars on January 14, 2003, as we again chat up The Black Dahlia, this time with a bonafide expert on the case as a guest chatter. Yes, I managed to catch Grahf this morning and he was able to edit the link back to the former address. Too bad there never was any notice given by PlanetZ, but I guess we really do get what we pay for.

Geez Tim, I wish I saw this post before I went to chat. After that build up the least I would have done was go in drag as Ms Cornwell. Too late now, but we had a great chat. The thrust of the chat was "are we being too closed minded to PC and maybe we should try different approaches to the mystery". If things go in the manner of past open chats, this will be the topic next Tuesday night. Everyone is welcome at chat, oldies, newbies, lurkers,or those who just want their questions answered. If you have an interest in JTR, serial killers, Victorian times, or other related topics, you will find kindred spirits at the regular chat. We meet at 9 PM Eastern time each Tuesday. See you there, Brad.

Hi, all:

A number of the longer-serving habitués of these message boards will remember Nick Danger. He has been quite ill but according to Carole Melis who saw him recently has recovered his health. I thought you all might enjoy the following poem about an event Nick and I attended in New York City a couple of years ago. Somewhat fictionalized (e.g., I am not a WWI reenactor), but mostly true, at least in spirit, or should that be spirits?

Nick has lost a considerable amount of the weight he had when all this took place--

World War I Reunion

I'm in Seventh Regiment Armory in New York City,
castellated behometh, quaffing scotches as I nervously
wait for Nick, my internet pal, in the half-
timbered bar. It's the regiment's 80th reunion,
only all these guys and gals were not born
when the doughboys charged over the barbed wire.
We're all re-enactors: the Yank colonel with handlebar 'tache,
Russian major with the lamb's wool Cossack hat,
me the Royal Flying Corps flight leader,
"What-ho, chaps, bandits at eight o'clock!"--as a waiter
sorties past with flutes of champagne. Nick arrives,
my short pudgy Jewish pal, son of a Garment District tailor,
a tub of lard thrust in a German private's challenged gray.

Somehow, we discover the banquet hall. All's a blur,
the evening a succession of toasts to departed comrades,
glasses of full-bodied Merlot, a snifter of cognac.
The lady medic with smart brass buttons on her tunic flirts
with me, I think, as in the swimming melée Nick records
the event and winks. As we part on maritime Park Avenue,
he gifts me a huge Cuban seed cigar, a German
1916 bayonet. So maybe I'll clean up Gotham's crime,
end up a statistic as I elect to walk back to my hotel.
I smoke my big stogie: smoke wreaths for the dead.

Black Dahlia Chat Tuesday night, January 14, at 8 PM CST, 9 PM EST, 6 PM West Coast time. This is the anniversary of the eve of the discovery of the bisected body of Elizabeth Short at 39th and Norton in Hollywood on January 15, 1947. Who was the killer? Our chat will discuss all the angles of the case.

The chat will be moderated by Christopher T. George, and we will have on hand Larry Harnisch, a Los Angeles Times reporter who is an acknowledged expert on the case. Larry wrote the 50th anniversary feature article on the case, and his book, Stairway to Heaven is in progress.

Larry's suspect is Dr. Walter Alonzo Bayley, who by 1946 resigned as Chief of Staff at Los Angeles County Hospital and Associate Professor of Surgery at USC due to a deteriorating mental condition. Until two months before the murder, Bayley lived at with his wife and step daughter at 3959 South Norton Avenue, a block from the crime scene. His shared medical offices were six blocks from the Biltmore Hotel where Beth Short was last seen alive. Bayley's adopted daughter, Barbara Lindgren, was a witness to the wedding of the victim's sister, Virginia Short, to Adrian West in February 1945 in Inglewood, California.

At age 67, Bayley would have been an older suspect which brings up parallels to several of the older suspects in the Ripper case, who also happen to be doctors (!), Drs. Francis Tumblety, Roslyn D'Onston (Robert D. Stephenson), and Sir William Gull. How does Larry answer criticisms that his suspect may have been too old or ill with the early stages of Alzheimer's disease? Or are there factors that make Bayley a viable suspect: his unbalanced state of mind, his knowledge of anatomy, and his possibly vindictive and anti-female nature (he separated from his wife before the murder and rewrote his will disinheriting her on December 22, 1947 before his death from bronchopneumonia on January 4, 1948).

See you in The JTR Chatroom!

Hi, all:

For those who missed it, we had a great chat last night on the Black Dahlia case with expert Larry Harnisch. I believe we had a record attendance in the room, if I am not mistaken. I wrote the following note to Larry to thank him for taking the time to be with us and being so generous in sharing his thoughts. I do believe he was with us for around 2 1/2 hours, from 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm.

Hi, Larry:

On behalf of Tim and myself, might I say, many many thanks for being with us last evening for our focused chat on the Black Dahlia case. I thought the session went extremely well and we are all grateful to you for making yourself available to talk about this fascinating case. Thanks also for staying so long and being tolerant despite the repetition of some of the
questions, which is almost inevitable in such circumstances with people coming and going and not
being party to your prior answers.

The best of luck to you in your research, Larry, and we will look forward to news of the publication of your book, which is sure to make a stir. As you gathered, a number of the contributors last night were intrigued by your theory about Dr. Bayley as the Black Dahlia Murder and will probably purchase the book once it is published. We might think about planning another chat for when the book does come out, unless you will be so tied up on a book tour by that point! :-)

Best regards

Chris
