Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Letters: General Discussion: Letters
Author: jamie woods Tuesday, 22 June 1999 - 12:16 am | |
hi, i'm relatively new to this, so bear with me. it's just my opinion, but isn't it possible that the ripper WANTED to be caught? perhaps he was troubled(obviously)and felt that he NEEDED to be caught. hence the writing to the cops. i agree with the second opinion that the 'in hell' letter was perhaps how he felt. maybe he felt he truly was in a hell of his own making and was sort of, i don't know, ASKING to be caught. hence also the use of 'when' instead of 'if'. by the way, great info in the site. jamie

Jamie, Thank you for your original contribution. We hope you will follow discussions here, and join more in the future. You are pretty well on the bullseye with what you say, IMHO. Reading the GSG and Lusk Letter as genuine, and the other letters as not genuine, corresponds to the best current thinking on the case. I do believe they alone represent pieces of the Ripper's state of mind when he wrote them. Good instincts! David

Hello All! Yes, Jamie, I'm inclined to agree that that is a very likely possibility...serial killers often, if not usually, have a longing to be caught. Not so much caught, really, but relieved of the pressre of what it is they are inclined to do. If Ted Bundy had not held the same compulsion to be caught, he would be a free man still today, I'm sure. Good thinking! Until next time... Yours truly, RED DEMON

There is no doubt that the Whitechapel murderer wrote no letters at all.

Hello, I.N. Scribe: How can we be sure it was you, I.N. Scribe, who wrote the above missive, and not some hoaxer posing under your name? Ripping idea, what? :-) I suppose what I am trying to say is, how can you categorically state that the Whitechapel murderer wrote no letters? Do you have a signed confession from him in which he states, "I wrote no bloody letters"? Chris George

There is no doubt that I.N.Scribe will not elaborate beyond his one-liner for nobody, and will not take no blame neither ;-) Love, Would-be Caz-trator of certain one-liners :-)

Hi y'all. JAMIE: Welcome aboard! Good topic, but I don't believe Jack wrote any of the letters in the police file -- The psychology doesn't meld with the hazy picture of JtR that hovers in my mind. RED DEMON: A belief that Jack wanted to be caught holds a romantic allure ... A bit silly sounding, but I like it. Bundy is a prime example, and I love your definition, Red - "Not so much caught, really, but relieved of the pressre (sic) of what it is they are inclined to do." Is it an original or a rental? :^) Take care, Janice
