Saturday, 11 January 2003 - 10:29 am |        | In the new Ripper Notes I received today, there is a short piece (in News and Notes on page 40) written about the new research I am compiling on Catherine Eddowes and her descendants.
There is a good chance that I will be publishing a booklet in February giving full details of the research, but I will just add some information to the Annie Phillips history.
As it says in RN, Annie Phillips gave birth to a son in 1886 called William Phillips. I now have the birth certificate for that year and it gives the address as 22 KING STREET, BERMONDSEY. This would be the address where Catherine last saw her daughter and hoped to find her still living there in 1888.
What is confusing is that Annie claimed at the inquest in 1888 to have left King Street a week after the birth of her child in order to avoid her mother approaching her for money? Yet, she is still living at the King Street address at least 2 months later!
I can also give the date for the birth of Annie's daughter Ellen Phillips noted in RN. She was born on 20th February 1889, which means Annie was about 5 months pregnant at her mother's inquest.
During the past six months or so, I have found two great great granddaughters of Catherine Eddowes, but am now searching for a third in the hopes of finding a photographic record of the family. I hope to find a photograph if not of Catherine, then perhaps her daughter Annie.

It would be very frustrating if someone finally found the kidney (say 15 years from now) and your people had moved away/died or somehow else got lost in the interim. Make hay while the sun shines. |

I think it would be very difficult to get a DNA sample from the Eddowes descendants simply because it's been a task and a half just to get them to reply to my letters.
Despite the Chapman descendants wanting to stay anonymous they are at least always helpful. But apart from one of the Eddowes lady's who is too old anyway to be asked to donate DNA, I am still trying to find a line of the family that knows more about the family history and pehaps is willing to come forward to talk about them?
I remain hopeful.

Monday, 13 January 2003 - 03:52 pm | | Christopher Charles Robinson has already been revealed as the cousin of Catherine Eddowes and was executed at Stafford in 1866.
I was surprised today to find the story about why he was sent to the gallows reported in The Times newspaper for the 10th January. I won't try to type the whole story here, but the gist of it appears to be that Robinson had cut his fiance's throat. Harriet Seager lay dead on the floor as Robinson then tried to cut his own throat three times, but was saved by a surgeon to face the noose.
Executioner was Smith, of Dudley.
