Laurie - The descendants of the canonical murder victims (when they can be identified) tend, in general, to be reclusive, not wishing to be bothered by some of the loonier element connected with Ripperology. Andy Parlour (co-author of The Jack the Ripper Whitechapel Murders is a descendant of Polly Nichols, and the only one who, to my knowledge, takes any real interest in the case at all. Recently the author Neal Shelden made contact with the descendants of Annie Chapman, and through their good graces was able to publish a photograph of Annie and her husband John (which is reproduced in Shelden's Jack the Ripper Victim Annie Chapman: A Short Biography and in the books The News From Whitechapel and Jack the Ripper: The Definitive History). They made it clear, however, that they wish not to be contacted by others. Shelden is also doing some research on the descendants of Catherine Eddowes, but I'm afraid I cannot say how far along he is. So the short answer to your question is 'no," and is likely always to be "no." I hope this helped. Christopher-Michael

Hi Laurie, Chris is right that the descendants of Annie Chapman wish to remain anonymous. They have taken an interest in the case since I met with the Great Granddaughter in Sept 2001, but I'm quite sure that that's as far as they will ever go. I have also spoken with two Great Great Granddaughters of Catherine Eddowes on the telephone and hope to meet one of them early in the New Year. But it's even more likely that this lady will want anonymity because her husband was a respected Police Officer for thirty years! It would be great if just one was willing to come forward, but it seems unlikely, and in any case not one of them knew that they had a Ripper victim ancestor. All the best. Neal

Well some of the Chapmans want to be famous.. I refer to Aaron Chapman of the band The Town Pants who wrote a song about Dark Annie (titled Dark Annie) and whose Piston Barouque album is absolutely excellent and I recommend it to anyone and everyone whether you like old and newfangled Irish tunes or not. A sample can be found here: The Town Pants Listen and Buy! Ally the Town Pants Groupie

Yay! I do like them a lot and try to broadcast whenever possible. Shoot me an email when you get it, I'd like to know what you think. My favorites (in no particular order) are: Low Tide Come With Me Dark Annie Mullohad the Mutineer Hell's Kitchen 7 Drunk Nights and a couple others that I forgot. Plastered in Paris too. Ally

"I refer to Aaron Chapman of the band The Town Pants who wrote a song about Dark Annie (titled Dark Annie) and whose Piston Barouque album is absolutely excellent and I recommend it to anyone and everyone whether you like old and newfangled Irish tunes or not. Ally the Town Pants Groupie" I'd just like to follow up amd echo Ally's sentiments on The Town Pants. Since it's arrived, it's been in constant play in the car, along with my daughter's hip hop and my oldest son's death metal. And I'll tell you this - when it plays, they don't demand it be skipped over, either! PISTON BAROQUE definitely rocks in it's own fashion. Samples to be found at their website. I believe it was Frank Zappa that said trying to write about music is like trying to dance architecture....Let's just say that The Town Pants remind me of the Pogues 'round the time of RUM SODOMY & THE LASH in that they both are a meld of rock sensibilities with the magic of traditional Irish folk music. It's a triumph. And it's even Ripper related! Got love the track "Dark Annie" with it's rousing chorus: "So I drink to your life And to your death, and I hope you put up a fight. And Annie Chapman I raise my glass to you on this winter's night." File under: Essential. Sir Robert
