July 1996

After a nearly fruitless three weeks of hop-picking with lover John Kelly, Catherine Eddowes returned to London with the hopes of pawning some men's clothing in order to earn money for food and shelter. The East London Observer, however, quoted the Superintendant of the casual ward at which she stayed upon her return as saying that Eddowes had another idea to earn some money -- "I have come back to earn the reward offered for the apprehension of the Whitechapel Murderer. I think I know him," she is claimed to have said to him on September 28th, two days before her death. Although Kelly made no claims to support any such intentions, Eddowes had told him she was going to visit her daughter in Bermondsey to earn some money -- yet her daughter had not lived there for some time, and since Eddowes was labelled by her offspring as a 'persistent scrounger,' Catherine should have known about the change in address (see Begg's Jack the Ripper: The Uncensored Facts, pp 115-116). Was she just joking? Was the entire incident made up? Or did Eddowes actually know something about the Ripper?

I feel that this incident was simply made up by the man who reported it to put himself in the limelight. This sort of behavior by people who know murder victims, is not uncommon. Furthermore, even if Eddows DID say this, she might have been doing the same thing. Or it is possible that she might have entertained her own pet theory as to who the ripper was. Many people who lived at the time ,especially local residents like Eddows, probably did so. In any event Eddows probably did not know her killer.

I'm sure a lot of the locals thought they knew who the killer was. Considering even today there as so many possible suspects, there must have been a good number of strange people in the area at the time. (Hell, I was there a few years ago and there are still a fair number of strange people hanging around that area.) I can't believe that she knew who the killer was. If she did, then how did she end up getting killed? Would she have taken this man as a client if she suspected he was about to murder her? Not likely.

G'day everyone.

I haven't come across this board before so I thought I'd see what we could come up with if I resurected it.

One interesting point here is that Catharine said she'd come back from hop picking to collect the reward for jack because she knew who he was. The only problem here is that there wasn't a reward on offer at that stage. (I think). The police refused to offer a reward because they said it would only lead to everyone accusing someone and it would only hinder their investigations. The vigilance people got some sort of reward thing going a bit later but that wasn't till after Catharine was murdered.

PLease correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi, all:

I would like to remind you of this upcoming event in the Casebook Productions chat room.

Discussion of "Kate Eddowes -- Did She Plan a Rendezvous?"

Date: Sunday, January 9, 2000

Time: 3:00 PM EST (UK 8:00 PM)

Where: In the Casebook Productions chat room
http://venus.beseen.com/chat/rooms/a/432561/

This discussion is expected to cover the debate about whether Eddowes was a prostitute looking for clients in the Duke Street/Mitre Square area or whether on the night of her death she had a rendezvous to meet Jack the Ripper because she was blackmailing him (Bob Hinton's theory in "From Hell: The Jack the Ripper Mystery" where he postulates that George Hutchinson was the Whitechapel murderer).

Best regards
