Casebook Message Boards: Witnesses: Specific Witnesses: That Cox Woman
Author: Sabine Maria Buechers Monday, 20 August 2001 - 04:02 am | |
That woman, Mary Ann Cox, who in the night Mary Jane Kelly was murdered, said the she had been too excited to sleep, so that she hadn't even bothered to undress. Nobody asked her what had excited her so much. Is it possible she saw something? The Ripper had a fire blazing away in Kelly's room. The two young women, Sarah Lewis and Elizabeth Something, heard the cry "Oh, murder!", one faintly, one loudly. Was it perhaps not Kelly at all who screamed but Cox? And did she get away because the Ripper was too taken up to notice? Was that the reason Cox went out again and returned only around 3 a. m.? Was she too scared to go get a policeman (who she might not have trusted anyway)?

Hello Sabine, very interesting hypothesis. But take notice that the scream was heard at about 4.00 a.m. Thus one hour after Cox came back. Her excitement could have been caused by her not finding enough clients that night and not being able to pay the "adjusted rent" the day after. I think we should look more to Miller's court like a working place than a lodging one. If the Coroner does not ask Mary Ann Cox why she was so excited (and I think you make a very big point pointing that out), or why she (as others in the court) went in and out so often is because (that's my version) of fearing that this fact (the purpose of Miller's court) could damage the reputation of the police and its methods. That's also why they close the inquest so fast. Bye. Graziano.

Dear Sabine - I am not sure where you found the statement that Cox was too excited to sleep. She certainly said nothing of the sort in the official inquest papers on the Kelly murder (MJ/SPC, NE1888, Box 3, Case Paper 19 [London Metropolitan Archives]). Are you sure you are not confusing her with Julia Venturney, who said "I was awake all night and could not sleep?" Regards, Christopher-Michael

Hello CMD, could it be that the official inquest papers did not tell everything that was told at the inquest ? That Mary Ann Cox stated she was too upset and she did not sleep at all (and even undress) was reported at least by the Daily Telegraph and by the Times (but from recollection also by other newspapers). Sarah Lewis had the same problem. Running the risk to be tedious by repeting myself, I do not think Miller's court was meant to sleep (or at least not if those women did not first deserved it). Bye. Graziano. P.S.: Don't you find that the Coroner's question to Cox asking her if the man she heard in the first morning in the court could have been a policeman is a very strange question ?
