Casebook Message Boards: Trading Post: Original 1888 newspapers on eBay?
Author: david kenney Thursday, 13 June 2002 - 02:36 pm | |
On ebay right now there are two - supposedly original 1888 newspapers featuring the white chapel murders. Both are listed in excellent condition - for some reason, it's hard for me to believe these are authentically 115 years old! Has anyone else seen these? Have items like this been offered before? If so - this would be a great item to have framed in a den or library to the esteemed ripper-ologists collection. Don't you think? Listing: Complete & Original, London "The Times" newspaper, dated October 18, 1888.Letters to the editor etc., on "The East-end Murder's". The ripper was still active at this time with one Mary Jane Kelly (Dec. Nov.9) still alive. Airmail post $4.00.Paypal or credit card.

Hi, David: I don't know the particular seller on ebay who is offering this item, but a lot of authentic period newspapers are offered on ebay and I should think it probably is genuine. Watch the price though because in the five days left in the auction, the price may shoot up dramatically. It is wise to watch out though ... there are some sellers on ebay who are selling copies of Ripper letters, etc., so be wary. Best regards Chris George

Dear Everyone, I sell quite a lot on ebay and might be able to help. Old newspapers were printed using a method known as movable type or in some cases hot metal. Either way they were printed by inking a plate containing metal letters and then pressing this onto the paper. This leaves indentations in the paper. A basic check is therefore to run the tips of your fingers over the printing, if you can feel these minute indentations its probable genuine. Hold the paper flat to a light and you can often see them. Modern papers are printed using a different method in which the print is transferred to the paper chemically not manually. This doesn't leave any indentations and is consequently quite smooth to the touch. Bearing in mind the cost involved in faking an entire paper the chances are any offered are genuine. I would advise against buying a cutting. I often sell facsimilie Punch cartoons on ebay, but I always ensure the word Facsimilie is prominent in the description. These are first generation copies direct from the originals and printed on a special paper. all the best Bob Hinton
