Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Suspects: General Discussion : The Greatest Newpaper Lie?
Author: Dave Saturday, 21 August 1999 - 05:06 am | |
With the growth of literacy in 19th century London and with the number of daily newspapers at that time, i can't help wondering if the newpaper industry created "Jack the Ripper" as a sales gimmick. (especially the Star). At a time when the attacking and murder of prostitutes happend on a regular bases, what would sell newspapers more the a serial killer, especially one who could not be caught. Perhaps it was this that triggered the Mary Kelly killing and realising they may have created a monster the hype had to stop.

Influence politicians to start a war to have news? Sure. Behind the scenes manipulation by a powerful news media owner is something that's been known to happen. Fake your own letters from the killer to sell papers? Sure, that's likely too. Actual killings and mutilations of real people to sell papers? Nah. The yellow journalists of the day could just make stuff up (and frequently did) so they wouldn't have to bloody themselves in the process. Dan
