Was Cross the ripper?

Wednesday, 30 June 1999 - 01:09 am |        | | I just had a scenario occur to me. The first man to find Nichols was a Mr. Cross who I understand worked in a slaughter house. He then finds a Mr. Paul and draws his attention to the body. Could Cross have been the ripper? Suppose he hears Paul coming, jumps up and says,"Look what I found!" To be honest, I'm not sure whether Paul came upon Cross with the body or if Cross left the body and went looking for help and found Paul. The latter sequence would not of course appear nearly as incriminating. |

Another interesting post. You do get us all thinking :-)
Nowadays, the first person to come across the body of a murder victim is usually put through hell by the police. When one of our famous Brit soap stars came across one of the Yorkshire Ripper's victims he was grilled for hours, and actually began to believe he may have had some sort of blackout and done the deed after all!
Did the police use these tactics on Cross or any other discoverers of bodies?

Friday, 02 July 1999 - 02:21 am | | | Cross testified at Nichol's inquest, leaving no doubts on the jurors minds as to the truth of his statement (the discovery of the body). But, you know, we can always have doubts about the truthfulness of Ripper witness statements. Cross could have murdered Nichols, then he runs to the nearest person he encounters on the street, encouraging him to accompany him to the victim. Interestingly, the bloodstains found in the street of this particular murder ran west of the victim, whereas Cross headed east (and encountered Paul). |

I don't know where you got the information that Charles Cross worked in a slaughter house, but the inquest testimony and Abberline's notes show that both Cross and Robert Paul had the occupation of carman, that is, they were carters who hauled or drove goods. In all likelihood, they were both innocent passersby on their way to work, as they testified. Certainly, there is seems to be no evidence that the police had any suspicion about either of them.
