MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS JACK THE RIPPER
Self-confessed eccentric John Pope de Locklsley has a family interest in solving the Jack the Ripper murders.
For John claims he is the great-grandson of one of the suspects in the 1888 Whitechapel killings - Severin Kolowski, also known as poisoner
George Chapman. John, 43, from Edgware, heard the family rumour that his great-grandfather was a murderer from his grandfather when he
was young.
And he told the Advertiser: ''When I started tracing the family tree my uncle Joe warned me 'stop it or you'll find something you won't like.'''
But he added: ''In fact, it's been very interesting.'' John could only trace his ancestors so far before he found his official great-grandfather,
James Russell, seemed not to exist.
So acting on the family rumours he traced the offspring of George Chapman, the wife-poisoner who was hung in
1903, but was also a Ripper suspect. Strangely, John found no record of Chapman's son, only his grandfather Thomas
Charles Russell, registered on March 1, 1886. Chapman was hanged for three murders in 1903 after arsenic was
found in his late wife's corpse and John believes the stigma made Chapman's son change his name.
Chapman also became a Ripper suspect because at the time of the Ripper murders he lived at the White Hart in
Bethnal Green Road and he fitted the Ripper's description. And John claims the Ripper murders were an evil
''experiment'' by Chapman, ''ripping up'' prostitutes to test poisons on their organs.
East End Ripperologist Roger Tyrell said this week the Chapman Ripper theory was ''entirely unlikely.'' But he added:
''If John can prove he is descended form Chapman that would still be something.'' And undaunted John told the
Advertiser: ''Just as long as people don't think it's the sort of trait that is inherited.'' |

Thursday, 13 July 2000 - 06:37 pm | | Based on previous stuff from this source It's about as likely as JTR being General Gordon who did'nt die at Khartoum, but was sent mad by dervish imprisonment,but escaped to commit the murders in a religious frenzy and was then shielded by his friend,Warren,who arranged for the Maybrick Diary to be written(using police information) to shift the blame,unfortunately,Gordon's Suicide in the Thames was later confused by rumour with that of Druitt, who was the Lover of Clarence ,murdered by J.K.Stephen, in a Jealous Rage...Whilst the Diary was being written the Harmless lunatic Kosminski (who ,when he forgot his name,was called Cohen) was blamed to Explain the lack of Police activity............How's that for a conspiracy theory.....will work in Gull when I get time...not to mentio the possibility that all the main characters are re-incarnations of people involved in the story of Borley Rectory.

Friday, 14 July 2000 - 02:45 am | | This must be the same John De Locksley who has written and privately published 3 books on the Ripper murders. In 1995 his suspect was apparently a Dr. Hewlett and then in 1996 he switched to Chapman. Has anyone read one of these books? I heard that they weren't worth the paper they were printed on.
