Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Suspects: General Discussion : Julius Lipman

Hi all I am currently researching various newspaper sources and have come across an article which names a suspect I had never seen before. I have used the "search" facility on Casebook but it found nothing. The article in question is from the News of the World dated 21 October 1900. The article is entitled "A 'Jack the Ripper' Suspect Dead" and reads as follows: "The death has just occurred in the East-end of London of Julius Lipman, nicknamed "Leather Apron", a cobbler, who in 1889 fell under suspicion of being "Jack the Ripper". He satisfied the police of his innocence but the stigma never left him. His business gradually disappeared, and he went to another neighbourhood where he took to drink. He died of neglect and semi-starvation." I have checked in the 1881 census but can find no individual of this name. I thought the Leather Apron nickname had been firmly fixed on Pizer. If anyone knows antthing about this individual and his involvement, I'd be very grateful to hear. I will be following up as part of my research and will post here anything of interest I find Regards Chris Scott

chris scott, I wonder if there is any connection between the name Lipman that you discovered to the name that comes up on a regular basis of Lipski. The name was yelled out the night that Stride was murdered I believe. julie

Interesting find here, Chris. You might want to check under the surname Lepman as a near alternative spelling. Regards, V.

Hi Viper Many thanks for the suggestion There was only one family of Lepmans in the area in the 1881 census: Abraham LEPMAN Head M Male 53 Germany Glasier Amelia LEPMAN Wife M Female 50 Germany Karl LEPMAN Son U Male 18 Germany Shoe Maker Woolf LEPMAN Son U Male 20 Germany Shoe Maker The address was 20 Plumber's Row which, interesting, was the next road to Mulberry Street where Pizer lived and actually ran down into Berner Street. From this it looks possible that it was in connection with the Stride murder that Lipman came under suspicion. I'm including the article itself below which I have now scanned Regards Chris

Is it possible that this actually is Pizer, having changed his name as a result of the "stigma"? It seems odd if this "Julius Lipman" was a different person, and was notorious enough for his business to be ruined, but has been unnoticed by previous Ripper researches. This would require "1889" to be an error for "1888". Perhaps Lipman's death certificate would shed some light on his identity.

Hi Chris I followed up what you suggested and found something rather interesting. There were 4 Lipman deaths registered in 1900 but none under the name of Julius. However, in September 1900 the death of a JOHN PIZER was registered at Grantham. He was aged 67. Considering the newspaper article dates from October 1900, this is food for thought! The full details are: Surname PIZER First name JOHN Age 67 District GRANTHAM Volume 7a Page 287 Thanks for the lead Chris S

LIPMAN in 1881 census I have searched for the name LIPMAN (including variant spellings) under any trade to do with cobbling, shoemaking etc and the following LIPMANs emerged: Richard LIPMAN 47 Wick Road Aged 37 born Hackney Bootmaker Charles LIPMAN 398 Hackney Road Aged 28 born Germany Boot maker for men Isaac LIPMAN 10 Marian Street Aged 48 Boot rivetter Isaac LIPMAN (son of above at same address) Aged 15 born Bethnal Green Boot Rivetter Philip LIPMAN 124 Cambridge Road Aged 23 born Stafford Shoemaker For any fan of Robin Odell's "shochet" theory I thought I'd also include the following: Niman LIPMAN 23 Scarborough Street Aged 38 born Poland Jewish slaughterer (Butcher) CS

From the 1891 Census: Isaac Lipman, 44, a coffee house keeper with two adult children, Lazarus and Rosie, who were a bootmaker and leather maker, respectively. Address: 40 New Street, Aldgate. Interestingly, this is the same adress of Hyam Hyams, the lunatic who was locked away in Colney Hatch Asylum on January 4, 1890. However, Hyam Hyams appears on the census at this time, apparently reported by his wife to the census enumerator. The Hyams and Lipman families were recorded as sharing this premise with another family in the 1891 census. (RG/12/235/f20/p31).
