Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Suspects: Ripper Suspects: Frank Miles

Calling all scholars, Does anyone know when Thomas Toughill proposed the color blind painter Frank Miles as a suspect? Furthermore, would anyone know when Colin Wilson discovered that Miles was incarcerated at the time of the murders in Brislington Mental Asylum? STAN

Stan, Toughill contacted Colin Wilson in the early 1970's with his theory about Frank Miles. It was mentioned by Colin in his introduction to Don Rumbelow's The Complete Jack the Ripper and was dated July 1974. Apparently Toughill intended to publish the theory but it must have foundered when it was discovered, around the same time, that he was put into the asylum in December 1887. In any case, Toughill's theory seems to date from immediately after the appearance of the Royal conspiracy nonsense. Best Wishes, Stewart
