For anyone who is interested..... There was a article in my local rag last night (Leicester Mercury) regarding Fredrick Deeming. It was a full page and it was mostly about his crimes until the last few paragraphs which inform us that he was suspected and confessed to being JtR. One piece of info which I didnt know was that he hailed from Ashby de la zouch, a town in Leicestershire. The article is far to long for me to reproduce here right now but I shall try at the weekend. Cheers Monty

This is probably already recorded somewhere, but here's a contemporary report from The New York Times: "London, March 26- The papers here to-day published the story of Deeming's confession which was cabled from Melbourne. The story caused the most intense excitement in Whitechapel. There is much difficulty in fixing the two Whitechapel murders to which Deeming is said to have confessed. Altogether ten murders are attributed to 'Jack the Ripper', but there is much doubt as to whether the last two were committed by the same hand as the other eight. The police of the Leman Street Station do not place much belief in the confession that Deeming committed these last two crimes. The last Whitechapel murder - that of Frances Cole - occurred in 1890. Her body was mutilayed in the manner of the other victims and certain of the organs had been taken out. The bodies of the other eight victims were found on the streets where they had fallen after the murderer had cut their throats, but the body of frances Cole was found concealed in an empty house at Westham. The police emphatically state that her murderer was not Deeming, as at that time he was in prison in Hull. The Scotland Yard authorities have received no private information from Melbourne regarding the confession, and thaey attach little importance to Deeming's statement that he killed two of the Whitechapel women. They say they believe Deeming's object in making that confession is to secure a remand and to be brought to England. This, they add, is a well-known trick of criminals." The glaring inaccuracies in this piece are particularly interesting, especially the claim that Frances Coles was missing organs and that her body was found in an empty house in Westham. What the hell is that about? Mike

P.S., The police assertion that Deeming was in prison in Hull at the time of Coles' murder may be an important research project for someone. What was he arrested in Hull for? Is this new information? Regards, Mike

Mike, According to the Mercury article, he was extradited back to Hull from Uruguay and spent 9 months in gaol for fraud. Monty

Jennifer, I think it has been taken off the site now. Sorry. Fred was supposed to have confessed to the last 2 murders but his solicitor denied that he did. He was convicted of murder ( a con artist who married ladies for dosh then done away with them) and hung. His death mask (I think it was a wax poured over his head then hardened, perhaps someone could help me on that..please) was kept at the Black museum and it was passed off incorrectly as Jack the Rippers.
