Macnaughten is the name of an old headmaster are the two related?
P.S.
Jay was known as a pschyopath who was very good at eton's rugby variant the wall game in fact one team evokes his name as they go out to play. It is claimed that Jay is responsible dor the death of someone while playing this game. |

Monday, 04 December 2000 - 03:37 am | | | Eton features in the Ripper story in at least two ways, in the tale of suspect Michael Ostrog, who committed some thefts there, and in Sir Melville Macnaghten being an Eton old boy. Macnaghten wrote a very slim and now quite rare volume called "Sketchy Memories of Eton" that was published in India in 1886 and in which he reminisces about his school days. I don't know the story of Jay, but would be interested in anything further you can find out about him. |

I was about to mention the point about Macnaghten being an Eton old boy but Paul has beaten me to it.
I agree with him about the story you tell being of interest?
Perhaps some of your other masters remember your old Headmaster and can provide further info?
Would it be possible for you to find out the words to this chant that the rugby players evoke, and any information on "Jays" full name might be of help, Was Jay, his surname? or are they shouting J, as in the first letter of Jack?, please post us more details?
Your post is a reminder to us all, just how easy it is for clues and other info on JtR to be missed or forgotten, there must be hundreds of ex Boys that have chanted this mans name over the last 100 years, but your post is the first time it has come to our ears, this is even more surprising considering that Eton is so famous an establishment here in the UK.
