Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Suspects: General Discussion : American Police knew it was Tumblety
Author: Sue Hanenkrat Wednesday, 13 September 2000 - 10:54 am | |
The American police knew it was Tumblety. The American "doctor" that fled to France, then came back to America. He crossed into Canada from time to time, was known to have preserved numerous uteruses, absolutely hated women. He was in England at the time of the murders, his landlady saw blood on a cloth the next morning after the murders, he came in late that night. He was under investigation by the London police, then disappeared to America, via France. Tumblety - The evidence is sooo strong

Ah Sue , the innocence of a newcomer to the case ! Further investigation will sadly reveal the compelling arguments against Tumblety being the Ripper. Sorry !

Ah Simon, the innocence of a newcomer to the case! Even further investigation will sadly reveal the compelling arguments against every known suspect being the Ripper. Sorry!

Sue,Tumbelty was an "abortionist",so of course he'd carry bloodstained "instruments".he also rented rooms under aliases because of his "work'.I just read an article on him, here in St.louis, where he died.

G'day Sue, Tumblety was 'Too Open' in his hatred of women. He was also 'Too Open' about his anatomical specimens. Leanne

Hi, Kevin: Excuse me, but Dr. Francis Tumblety was an herbalist who used drugs to bring about abortions. Such drugs are known as abortifacients and have been used for centuries to induce abortion in pregnant women. There is no evidence that he ever did any surgery in his life. Best regards Chris George

Chris,I don't dispute that Tumbelty was a Herbalist, but just because there isn't(or wasn't)evidence that he performed abortions using "instruments",doesn't mean he didn't.

Kevin, Was the (St. Louis) article about Tumblety tied in to the opening of From Hell? Could you scan and paste the article onto this board? Thanks! Take care, Kevin

Leanne--I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the statement 'Tumblety was Too Open about his anatomical specimens', except perhaps, that you mean that had there been anything diabolical about his methods of obtaining these specimens, Dr. T wouldn't have been showing them to his acquaintances. But Tumblety seems to have had these specimens in another country in another era; there is no indication that those in Whitechapel [or even Littlechild] were ever aware of those specimens. So one might argue that this odd specimen collection of Dr. T's is a fact entirely independent of the suspicions of Littlechild and the Whitechapel police---which would make for a rather odd coincidence, considering that Whitechapel murderer of Chapman, Nichols, and Eddowes collected organs. I like the speculation at the end of Stewart Evans & Paul Gainey's book that James Munro's "very hot potato" theory might have had something to do with the Ripper having been once in police custody ---but that they had let him slip through their fingers. Munro's statement that his theory was based on a 'practical standpoint' is also very interesting--but hard to interpret. Cheers, RP
