Casebook Message Boards: Ripper Suspects: Specific Suspects: Later Suspects [ 1910 - Present ]: Nicaraguan "Ripper" Murders, The

The New York Sun reported on 25 January 1889 that six murders had been committed in Managua in Nicaragua. All the victims were women, all prostitutes, all mutilated. All were killed within a ten day period, apparently in January 1889. Guy Logan in his book Masters of Crime suggests that Scotland Yard contacted the Managuan authorities and received information which made then consider that the Ripper may have gone to South America.

I wonder how much truth there is in the NYT reports of the Jan 1889 murders. They were mentioned in the Tumblety theory in order, possibly to give him something to do when he got off the boat in New York but as far as I could see there was no attempt to trace Tumblety's movements that far south of the border. Something that I would do, were I not chained to a dialysis machine in rural Wales three times a week, would be to go through the files of our Nicaraguan Consulate which are held in the Public Record Office at Kew. I would think that the then British Ambassador in Nicaragua would have reported such events back to Whitehall.

Did any autopsy reports survive to show just what kind of mutilations the prostitutes endured in Nicaragura? Also, where there any other Ripper like killings elsewhere in a country other then England and excepting Carrie Brown in the USA? It seems to me more research would need to be done in this area, but it is fascintating link. Although, I doubt Jack had traveled abroad and probably these murders were copycats, it would still be a good idea to look into it.

Howdy Peter, Paul, Odista! Seems like I just received my answer on this board to a question that I asked about on another. The other board on General Discussion, "Jamiacan and Nicaraguan Murders" mentions some interesting tidbits about the Jamaican crimes. Would seem to bolster the possibility of the Ripper being a sailor, or at very least a travelling or sea-faring man. Cheers.....Mike

Dear Mr. Begg: How are you sir? I am new to the Casebook Message Board. I wanted to know if there are any surviving documentation regarding the Ripper-like murders in Jamaca and Nicaragua. Were any photographs taken ,and more importantly, what suspects were in that part of the world at that time. IF the ripper did in fact commit those murders then we can rule out a host of other suspects. Correct??? Thank you . RON
