Hi, folks: Failing the attempts by Dave O'Flaherty and Stewart to post some images of steam fire engines here are several sites that show images and discuss the old-fashioned horse-drawn steam fire engines: http://www.csfa.net/steamer/steamer.asp http://www.engine3.org/Horses.html http://members.tripod.com/rawtenstallfire/history.htm All the best Chris

Images of contemporary fire engines. The first drawing shows a Shand-Mason machine of 1870. This was quite a popular model. The second illustration shows a machine from about 1890, maker not listed but used in Leicestershire. Both illustrations taken from a handy little book that is highly recommended if you ever want to see what old horse transport looked like:- Discovering Horse-drawn Vehicles by D. J. Smith, published by Shire Publications. Regards, V.

Not sure what happened above when adding credit for the pictures. Lost the second image but here it is again - the right way up this time!

Hi Fire Engine Fans, Anyone wishing to know how NOT to attatch a horse to one of those "steamers", should watch the 1939 Will Hay film "Where's that Fire". As an added bonus, Captain Viking also demonstrates how NOT to install a fireman's pole. Jim

As a bit of trivia... my understanding is that the fireman's pole were introduced in firehouses because the horses used to climb up stairs! Chris

OK, Chris, you asked for THIS!!! Poles were installed in firehouses so the firemen could lean against something while peeing down into the horse stalls below! THEN the horses learned how to climb stairs so as to avoid the deluge. AND, before anyone hollers at me about being disrespectful of firemen, I want all to know that my son-in-law is a firefighter in Vermont, we are VERY proud of him, and most respectful of the amazing job he and his fellow smoke-eaters do. Cheers, J
