Casebook Message Boards: General Discussion: Miscellaneous: Lacassagne Victim Photographs, 1899

There's been some discussion about the victim photographs reproduced in Lacassagne's 1899 work "Vacher l'eventreur"... I'm afraid I haven't really followed the thread, but I thought some people might be interested in seeing the actual photos from the book.

Stephen, the picture of Catherine Eddowes that appears in Vacher l'éventreur et les crimes sadiques is indeed a photograph but one that has been touched up with paint, a very common method to add detail to early photographs. It must be remembered that this was a fairly early example of a book that contained photos and not just drawings or etchings, and the Eddowes pictures are not of the best quality. You should also be aware that the photograph used was not the same as the one which you have posted as the "usual" photo. If you check Farson you will see the full length photograph of Eddowes that was re-touched and printed in Laccasagne's book. Wolf.

Wolf - thank you for the explanation! I removed the aforementioned scans, only because I was just now informed that these photos are to be the subject of an upcoming private publication, and I certainly didn't mean to "scoop" anyone. Particularly since its a private publication I think its only fair to allow the author to publish them first.
