Martha Tabram -- last seen with a soldier Annie Chapman -- last seen with a dark complexioned man (grease paint?) over 40 (makeup?), only somewhat taller than Chapman, shabby genteel Elizabeth Stride -- thrown down by a 30 year old man, 5'5" who had brown hair, and a fair complexion with a small brown moustache, a full face and broad shoulders and a dark jacket and trousers Catherine Eddowes -- last seen with a 30 year old, 5'7" (not much different than 5'5"), fair complexion, brown moustache, Salt and pepper coat. Red neckerchief, grey peaked cloth cap. Mary Kelly -- last seen with a 34 or 35 yr old, 5'6" with a pale complexion, dark hair, slight moustache curled at ends, long dark coat trimmed with astrakhan and generally dressed like a dandy. While there are major differences between Tabram's soldier, Chapman's dark skinned foriegner, and Kelly's dandy, the two descriptions given the night of the double event are very close. It is possible if JTR was really into disguises and if his bolt-hole was between Berner St. and Mitre Square he might have had time to dash in, shed his dark jacket and don a salt and pepper coat and red neckerchief. The cap seen by Schwartz was black, the one seen by Lawende gray. If it was faded black or dark gray this could account for the difference. I had always put down the difference in eyewitness descriptions to the vagaries of human recollection, but now that I see that the two sightings that are the most similar happened about 45 minutes apart, when he didn't have time to change his appearance much I have to wonder.

Yes, yes, the man seen by Schwartz was the same as seen by Levy, Lawende and Harris. Flip of the bird to Mr. W. David
