Casebook Message Boards: General Discussion: Miscellaneous: Did the victim's know each other/their murderer?

Is there any evidence that the victims (just the five canonical to start with) knew each other? Is there any reason to believe that the victims knew their murderer? Thanks Cromo

Hello Cromo, There's a reasonable probability that Liz Stride knew, at least, one of her attackers. From leaving the Bricklayers Arms to Dutfield's Yard she was seen in the company of a clerky looking man. Matthew Packer watched as the pair stood in the rain for around half an hour. I would venture that Stride knew the man as it's fairly obvious that she was neither soliciting for business or especially keen to, er, get down to business. But I could be wrong! Thanking you, Jim Leen

Hi Jim Thanks for the posting. It seems to be a common theme that when the victims are seen prior to their deaths, they are seen chatting amicably with whom we might presume to be the murderer. Cromo

Stephen You might want to review an older thread which pursues that question. http://forum.casebook.org/messages/3/2362.html?SundayDecember1319981118am If that link does not work look under.... Topics / Ripper Victims / General Discussion / Circle of Friends. Best Regards, Jon

Hi Stephen, The People Newspaper of the 11 November 1888 reported that Mary Jane Kelly had been a friend of the previous victim Annie Chapman. No other newspaper appears to have reported this connection, but it's likely that the newspaper guys of the time fished around for different stories from people living in Dorset Street. I don't really believe that Nichols, Chapman, Stride, or Eddowes, knew each another at all. Perhaps there's an outside chance Eddowes knew Kelly but I personally don't think so? I believe Joseph Barnett said that he used to read about the murders to Kelly, but he didn't indicate that she knew any of the victims. With Chapman at least she did lodge close to where Kelly was living.

Jon and Neal Thank you for your help. I will follow up that thread Jon, I should have guessed this would have been discussed previously. I take your point re: Barnett Neal and believe that if there was proof that the victims knew each other, the police would have been following up different motives and men that also knew the victims and that if that had happened, it would be common knowledge today. Therefore, I think it is safe to assume that the victims were not friends. Cromo
