Are there maps extant for the Whitechapel area during 1888? I know the area has changed considerably with the two world wars and with urban renewal projects over the years. I am looking for the map to give footing as it were to a novel I'm working on, Kindest regards, Neil

My question is about maps of 1888. Does anyone know how available maps were to the public? Were they sold in local stores or public offices? I ask because on some of the map threads, geometric figures, etc. are found in the connection of the murder sites. Vicki

Vicki, Ordnance Survey at Southampton informed me that their maps were available to the public in 1888 but they were not cheap by standards of the day. They did inform me of the price but alas I have forgotten the exact sum. It may have been about two shillings and sixpence or slightly more. Professional people rather than working class folk would have bothered buying them because of the price. You can always give OS at Southampton a ring they are most helpful.

Thank you Ivor, I feel it is very possible that the Ripper could have walked his victims just where he wanted them, if he wanted to connect dots on a map for whatever reason. Vicki
