Casebook Message Boards: General Discussion: Miscellaneous: Materials Shown on "From Hell" DVD
Author: Joseph P. Matthews Thursday, 18 July 2002 - 11:48 pm | |
Hello everyone, I have a question for Mr. Stewart Evans and/or anyone else who can answer. I was watching the extra features on the "From Hell" DVD a few days ago. There is a feature called, "Jack the Ripper: Six Degrees of Seperation." Stewart Evans narrates a lot of it and during the program he has a portfolio with photos, contemporary drawings, and other information that he shows to the camera. I am interested in obtaining a copy of that portfolio if possible. Mr. Evans, is that portfolio available for purchase and/or copying? If it is possible, I would very much appreciate it. If not, I understand. I just thought I would ask. Thank you, Joe

Hi Joe, That interview was shot in my study and the folder is just a selection of some of the images in my collection. Many of them have been published and it was used as a means for illustrating the story of the murders. As such it is not an item that is for sale and I wondered which of the images you are particularly interested in. I have assisted others in the past with specific images and, as I say, several have already been published. Best Wishes, Stewart

Hi Joe, If you don't already have it, you must order 'Jack the Ripper and the Whitechapel Murders' by Evans and Skinner, and published by the PRO. The sixteen documents are reproduced exquisitely. From police reports to letters to the Mitre Square drawings. It's a fantastic portfolio that no Ripper enthusiast should be without. Where else can you get a full reproduction of the Macnaghten Memoranda? Cheers, John

Mr. Evans, Thanks for your quick reply. Many of the pictures I saw, I do have published copies in various books, etc. Specifically, I was interested in some of the contemporary drawings. I have seen some of them, but I do not recall a few. For example, one had a sensational caption something along the lines of "off to meet her doom." I do not think that is the exact wording, but you get the idea. I just found those to be interesting. If you know where I can find some of those, please let me know. Thank you again. I enjoyed the interview you did, by the way. Jack -- I do not have that document pack yet, but I am planning on buying it soon. I visited the PRO website, and hopefully I will order it soon. The site I looked at had the item for sale in pounds. Being an American, will they ship this to me or should I try another site? Thank you, Joe

Hi Joe, The document pack has two prices on it: £14.99, and US $19.95. The PRO will ship it to you. Or if you prefer, you can order it from Rupert books. http://www.geocities.com/rupertbooks/ Hope this helps. Cheers, John

For those who own From Hell on DVD, there is an extra bonus on Disc 2. The documentary of Knight's "JtR: The Final Solution" is included in it's entirety as a hidden feature. The video quality isn't the best, but it's interesting to watch. To view it, put in the 2nd DVD and on the Main Menu highlight the entry called 'Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fonder.' Then press the 'Down' key on your remote, and then press the 'Right' key. This will highlight one of the surgical tools in the backdrop. The press 'Enter' and the show will start. Regards, John Hacker

Does anyone know if this hidden feature on the From Hell DVD is on the UK Region 2 disc, or just on the US Region 1 disc? Or to put it more simply (!) - are both versions the same? A US website of DVD 'easter eggs' mentions this hidden feature, but I cannot find any From Hell hidden features on UK websites. Thanks - Garen.

I still haven't managed to find the hidden feature on my Region 2 copy, so I'm thinking that it may be a Region 1 feature only. Cheers Guy

Esther, I got this from http://www.dvdeastereggs.com : --------------------- Access The Eggs.. 1) On Disc One, go to the Language Selection menu. Highlight "Main Menu" at the bottom and press Right. The eye at the top will open. Press enter to view hidden credits. 2) On Disc Two, Use your players menu to access Title 4. For a collection of informal rehearsals and similar fun. 3) On disc one, if you press 5 in the special features menu, you will see a silhouette of Jack The Ripper, and get a THX promotional video. 4) On the second disc, or features disc, you are given the first of two pages of special features. "Jack the Ripper: 6 degrees of seperation" is your first choice. Press right once and you've highlighted what looks like a fishing hook in the carving tools. You press "enter" and you are treated to a 40 min cheesy '70s style show about Steven Knight, the author of the book that inspired the graphic novel that the Hughes Bros took ot make the movie. Enjoy!! The egg on disc 2 may not be accessable on some dvd players. You click "right" as the instructions say and the "tour the murder sites" gets highlighted instead. It is easier to access this egg on a dvd-rom and just use the mouse on the computer.. Use your DVD player's menu to access this 40 minute documentary. Under Title 21. --------------------- Good luck! - Garen
