Casebook Message Boards: General Discussion: Miscellaneous: Brady Clubs?
Author: Timsta Tuesday, 09 July 2002 - 01:22 pm | |
This little snippet from "A Guided Tour of Whitechapel’s Jewish Quarter" at http://www.ibiblio.org/yiddish/Places/London/london.htm "Durward St. was also the home of the Brady Club. The Brady Club played an important role in developing the character of Jewish youth in the East End. It offered recreation in physical persuits like boxing, wrestling, badminton, table-tennis and annual sea-side camps. There was also a library and debating societies. There was also a girls Brady Club in Hanbury Street." Interesting. Anyone any idea *where* in Hanbury St? And what dates these clubs operated? Regards Timsta

It's now called The Brady Centre and also Bradi Sentar, and is used as a local communal building, housing offices for Social and Health workers. It was established in 1897 and is at 192-196 Hanbury Street, which is near the intersection with Cover Close

Thanks Graham. Too late to have been of any relevance to the murder site, then. Regards Timsta

You're right, but I have found vague references to several other similar establishments set up both before and after this one. The owners of one, interestingly enough, were called Henriques(?) and it is after them that Berner St was renamed. I currently work very close to the murder sites here in London (just down the road from Mitre Square in fact) so if you, or anyone else reading this, need someone to nip round there and do a bit of legwork I am more than happy to oblige. I don't have anything else to do at lunchtimes other than go to the pub!
