Author: Harry Mann Saturday, 08 June 2002 - 06:04 am | |
Does anyone have any idea of the full list of items that were found in Kelly's room.Does anyone have an idea of what articles would be expected to be found in those day's in a single room occupied and lived in by a couple. A bed, table, chair, teapot, candle. We know those items were present, but surely there were more. What did they eat with, what did they clean with, with what did they cook?. Any comments.

Harry, I have never seen a complete list of contents for Kelly's room nor have I ever heard of one.

No such list exists that I know of, various news articles list a few items, thats all. Abberline made an inventory of the contents of the room, another loss. Regards, Jon

G'day, 'The furniture consisted of a bed upon which the body was stretched, which was placed next to a disused washstand in the corner behind the door, and opposite the two windows, in the smaller one of which there were two panes of glass broken. A man's coat was put across there to keep out the draught. Close to the larger window stood a table, and another table of smaller size was placed between it and the bed, and it was upon this that the flesh stripped from the body was heaped.....Next to the fireplace was a cupboard' ('The Standard' 12 November 1888.) 'The only attempts at decoration were a couple of engravings, one "The Fisherman's Widow" stuck over the mantlepiece; while in the corner was an open cupboard containing a few bits of pottery, some ginger beer bottles and a bit of bread on a plate.' ('The Pall Mall Gazette', 12 November 1888.) All furnishings beonged to the landlord. I always thought that the tennants of Miller's Court all used a common kitchen in McCarthy's shed. LEANNE

I have known of couples who lived in a bed sitter, and who did all their cooking on one small fireplace.Such items as coal scuttle, fire tongs, toasting fork are some of the items rarely seen today, and frying pans, kettles, tea pots, common enough today were all items once associated with the fireplace.
