Currently, I believe that the victims were randomly chosen at the time of the crime. But, if victims were selected in advance (as is often the case with serial killers today), I have wondered if the London Hospital wasn't (one of) his hunting grounds. The idea sprung to mind reading about Annie Chapman who had just come from there at the time of her death. The other victims were in various stages of health, but even the healthiest (Kelly?)would have visited the local hospital for something or another.
I'm very interested to hear what you turn up; please do keep us posted!

Hi NR,

Actually Annie Chapman visited a Casual Ward and not the London Hospital.(This being reported as The Mile End Casual Ward.) Also it's rather interesting that when Catherine Eddowes returned from her 'hop picking' expedition with John Kelly, they lacking in funds, Eddowes decided to stay at the Shoe Lane Casual Ward. And but another interesting fact is that the spot Polly Nichols met her demise was only a couple of blocks away from yet another Casual Ward.

Now neither Elizabeth Stride nor Mary Kelly were reported to have gone to a Casual Ward, nor were they murdered near one, but there is an interval of two days in Elizabeth Stride's life(inbetween the time she left Michael Kidney and when she took up lodgings on Flower and Dean Street) that we simply don't know where she disappeared to. So who knows?

Of course this all may just be a series of interesting coincidences. But perhaps it's not?

I started a thread recently asking about information on the Casual Wards of the day. So if you're looking for information you might try looking there.

Adios,

Chris H.

Chris, just coincidence I do suppose, both Stride and Kelly had a certain man in their lives and both were trying to rid themselves of those men,-- and both ended up dead!
