I was in the pub this evening and a friend , who knows of my interest in Jack the Ripper told me that the Cricketers pub in Brighton has a room dedicated to him. Has anyone heard of this?

Hi, Tony: The Cricketers Inn in Black Lion Square, Brighton with the room dedicated to Jack the Ripper is where Roslyn D'Onston stayed in 1888 prior to admitting himself to the London Hospital on 26 July 1888. While he was at the pub, supposedly he planned the Whitechapel murders. So get yourself seated comportably and Mr. Ivor Edwards will tell you all about the Cricketers Inn, Brighton, and his suspect, Dr. D'Onston. All the best Chris

Thanks Chris. Brighton seems to have a few links to the case. I was walking up Dyke Road the other day and noticed a big sign on the side of a building which read Wynne Baxter Solicitors. I'd no idea the eccentric old bugger had offices down here. I really must keep my eyes open more, there's probably a photo of Abberline nailed to the pier and I haven't noticed it! Tony

Hi, Tony: It could be that the modern-day Wynne Baxter in Brighton is a relation to the Wynne Baxter of Whitechapel Murders fame. A number of families have names that reoccur throughout the generations, and just as members of the same family are, for example, in the medical profession, with a son following his father as a doctor, it's possible that Wynne Baxter of the Ripper case had offspring or relatives that went into the legal profession. According to A to Z, Wynne Edwin Baxter of 1888 came from Lewes, Sussex, not far from Brighton, so the odds are they are the same family. All the best Chris George

Hi Folks Wynne Baxter Solicitors’ Web-site, www.wynnebaxter.com, confirms that Coroner Baxter of Whitechapel fame was a founding partner of the firm which now has offices in Lewes, Brighton, and Eastbourne. They’ll probably regret mentioning that now. Best Wishes alex

Hi, Alex: An American law firm might have similar regrets to be vicariously linked to the Ripper case now that Peter Birchwood and I have determined that the premises now occupied by a Baltimore law firm are a portion of the building at 218-220 North Liberty Street that 102 years ago housed a lodging house where Dr. Francis Tumblety was living in 1900. The law firm occupies 220 and a carryout restaurant is at 218 North Liberty. This new finding is reported on the Tumblety board and I will have more to say about Dr. T and his Baltimore connections at the upcoming US Jack the Ripper Convention in Baltimore, April 19-21. Sorry you and Jayne can't be with us, Alex! Follow the link to the name of the law firm, of Belsky, Weinberg & Horowitz, L.L.C., and you will see a map of Baltimore with the location of the Baltimore City office of the law firm marked. The links to the Ripper case are many and varied! Best regards Chris George

Hi Chris Well-done to yourself and Peter. Sterling research, without doubt. I too regret that we won’t be at the US conference, but cling to the hope that one day we will be able to attend. If that day ever dawns, however, I’ll need some serious memory jogging, as I was labouring under the misconception that your conference took place a couple of weeks ago. Ah, the afflictions of old-age. You are, of course, correct that Ripper connections turn-up in the most unlikely locations. With this in mind, I’m still hoping to find something under the bed. Very Best Wishes, and every success for the UP-COMING Conference. alex

Hi Alex: Thanks for the best wishes for our upcoming conference. Old age is afflicting me too these days but I am pretty sure that we have not held the conference yet and that it will be coming up in ten days time, much to our joy to be able to welcome Don Rumbelow here as our guest of honor! Again, sorry you and Jayne won't be here but I also cling to the hope that one day you will be able to attend one of our U.S. events, or else if not that I will be able to meet you in the U.K. before long. Also, the best of luck with your upcoming book from McFarland on Ripper stories from the Daily Telegraph that you have assembled with Messrs. Yost and DiGrazia! All the best Chris George
