Does anyone know of a letter that was sent to the Metro Police on 30 October 1888 where the author threatened to disembowel and remove the heart of a child? Peace, Scott

Scott, I've not heard of that one but shall do a bit of browsing tonight. Is this something to do with the Bradford connection ? Monty

Yes, it does Monty. The inquest for John Gill was held on 2 January 1889. At the request of Chief Inspector Swanson, Dr. George Bagster Phillips went to Bradford to examine the body. Phillips arrived to late to attend the inquest as it started that morning and ended that afternoon. The reason Swanson and others became so interested in the Bradford Murder, aside from the obvious reason, was because of a letter that was received by the Metro Police on 30 October, 1888, in which the author of the letter threatened to kill a child, disembowel it and remove the heart. A point of contact would be David Barnett, a reporter with the Bradford Observer. He wrote a story about the murder on 1 November of last year. In the article he tells of the arrival of Phillips and the letter. Because of time difference I am having a bit of a hard time making contact with Mr. Barnett. Aany help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Peace, Scott PS Also Monty, if you would like a bit of an adventure that involves digging through old police records, Bradford Police took extensive photos of body and the crime scene. Those photos may be lying around somewhere.

Scott, I recall the letter you are referring to. Since your interest is in the Bradford case, you will probably be interested in a Ripper letter received by the C Division on January 15th, 1889. The text of it, or at least what could be determined, appears in Evans and Skinner's 'Letters From Hell' on page 269-70. The letter reads: Dear Boss I will [illegible] rip another woman on [illegible] in Whitechapel last I chucked some old wo[missing] in the thames because [missing] began to squeal but I...[illegible]...I riped (sic) up little boy in Bradford [missing] in Slough. Dear Boss you will hear [missing] me soon. yours truly - Jack Bane [?] Alias Jack the Ripper [?]. The authors thought the letter to have been written in red ink, but they couldn't be sure. If I discover the text of the letter you referred to I'll be sure to post it. Yours truly, Tom Wescott

As soon as he arrived on the spot and examined the body of the little boy, Dr Phillips positively and definitely dismissed the case as having no connections at all with the murders of the women in London. This is reported in L'Indépendance Belge. Do not dismiss this newspaper too soon just on the basis it is a belgian one, the Lord Mayor De Keyser was also, and the paper is many times much more informed than its londonian fellows. But it is not reported why. Bye. Graziano.

Scott, Tom, There is also a letter in the "Letters from Hell" book stating that the author denies anything to do with an "arrest in Bradford". The interesting thing for me about that letter is that it was sent before the Bradford murder. I shall find out the date unless someone beats me to it. Monty PS Scott, E-mail me any info you have on this Dave Barnett or the Bradford observer and I shall see what I can do.

Thanks everyone, Monty I will scan Barnett's news paper article and send it to you. As for the Skinner and Evans book I have been pouring through it with a fine tooth comb and no letter of this sort prior to the 15 Jan. 89 letter appears with the execption of one, I don't have my notes in front of me now, that mentions a child. This letter conveys none of the supposed text that would have sent Phillips to Bradford. Thanks again to everyone again for your input. Peace, Scott
