Hi Cue, Just noticed your message. I wrote a lengthy piece on this in December, but the post was wiped out with the great holiday crash of the Casebook message boards. Unfortunately, I never saved it. The provenance of the shawl is dubious but interesting. I am so busy with work right now that I don't have time to relay the story. I am sorry about that. I do not have a scanner, otherwise I would be able to post the pictures and information from my files. If you still do not get the answers you need, just remind me at the end of the month. I will have time to post it then. Sorry that I am not able to help you immediately. Cheers, John

Hi Cue, The pic comes from the Pamela Ball "Physic Investigation" book. The caption reads Andy & Sue Parlour with the shawl's present owner (?) Looking closely it looks like rather a nice item. Pamela Ball herself believes in its authenticity however I would say that it's provenance has to be sketchy at best. Regards Jeff D

Ahh haaaahh ! .... the elusive policeman, who retreived the shawl from the scene of the murder. I think you're spot on, commenting that it looks pretty good considering.... and in my mind is not the kind of item I could see poor Kate wearing. It really is too nice! The story goes that a policeman, (probably drafted in from another division when the police increased patrols at the height of the Ripper scare) alledgedy found the item and somehow kept it as a souvenir. I guess anything is possible eh? Probable is another question . Many Regards Jeff D

Jeff mentions that the shawl was allegedly found and kept by a constable drafted in from another division. I think this is doubtful, but I am interested (for other reasons) if there is an extant list of officers drafted into Whitechapel during the Ripper scare? Thanks, Mike

Mike, The "Dissertations" section of Casebook, has an entry by Andrew Morrison, "Stephen White, Amos Simpson and the Eddowes'Shawl" here. However I am sure that you are familiar with "Dissertations". You have three articles listed. Your intriguing "A Tale of Two Frenchys" appears twice. Ally may need to delete one. Take care, Kevin

Mike, Cue, you might like to read an article by Kevin O'Donnell (author of The Jack the Ripper Whitechapel Murders - based on Andy and Sue Parlour's research) which appeared in Ripperologist, August 1997. The article is reproduced on the magazine's old website. http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/7020/issue12/shawl12.html Regards Adam www.ripperologist.net

Hi Kevin and adam, Many thanks for the info. I'll certainly check it out. Kevin, you're quite right. It seems to be A Tale of Four Frenchy's back in the Dissertations section! Best regards, Mike
