Casebook Message Boards: General Discussion: Research Issues / Philosophy: 1901 Census
Author: Jesse Flowers Wednesday, 02 January 2002 - 02:33 pm | |
Hello all- This is probably common knowledge for posters from the UK, but for everyone else, the Public Records Office has just made the entire 1901 census for England and Wales available online. The site is located at- www.census.pro.gov.uk The PRO also announced that the 1891 census will be available online by next year (wish they had done that one first, actually...) Happy hunting AAA88

Dear Everyone, Unfortunately the 1901 census online is much the same as most of the promises made by this Government. All froth and razz matazz, the reality being the census is not online and has not been on line due to a complete system failure. I am writing to my MP to ask why this task wasn't sub contracted to the Mormons, they seem to manage the 1881 census ok. I urge all fellow posters in UK to do the same Bob Hinton

Hi Bob yes the Latter Day Saints did a good job with 1881 census but only as a typed transcript but you are right the 1901 census online is a shambles I have contacted them several times and it gets worse the site is now limited to an unspecified number of users on 4/1/2002 it was actually shut down by BT this is after promises that the site was to be widened to allow more access Incidentally you can purchase the 1891 census for London from S&N Genealogy I have it but have not had time to try it yet from Stephen Miller

Dear Stephen, The Mormon 1881 did have very powerful search facilities, although restricted to name only. I have the 1891 and this doesn't have nominal search facilities only street search, but both are excellent value for money and extremely well worth buying. all the best Bob Hinton

Hi again Bob the 1881 can be searched by area thogh if you type in Whitechapel I suspect the list will be quite large As for 1891 census for London a name index is on the way though I would think that Local Family History Societies will have a name index for their area I have one for Lincolnshire hope this helps good luck steve miller

I suppose that we should have realised what was going to happen with the release of the 1901 Census. The same thing happened when the LDS released the IGI (familysearch.com.) And of course exactly the same thing will happen when the 1930 US Federal Census is released in April of this year although I don't yet know whether it will be on the internet. We just have to face the fact the genealogy is incredibly popular. I know that I've got 12 cases, one of which is worth £230,000 and all of them depending on information from the 1901 census. We'll just have to keep trying. Incidentally, the 1881 census did take nearly ten years work to get the surname index onto fiche and that was with the LDS plus the Federation of Family History Societies. There is no relaible estimate as to the cost of this operation if it had been done on a commercial basis.

Hi, I'm not a researcher, let's get that out of they way first. My question to all and sundry is quite simple, has anyone been able to see the 1901 census up close and personal ? If so does it offer any help ? (see, honest questions on my chosen subject, not all stupid). Tris

I have been reading this site for the past year or so. However this is my first post. I was doing some family history research of my own when I came across this site. www.familysearch.org It is run by the mormon church (aparently they have an interest in family history). Anyway it has census reports from 1881 UK and US plus lots more. I ran a couple of names through from the ripper case and got some results. Not sure if this is already common knowledge to the researchers on this site but it may be of use to some of you. Like I say apologies if this site is already common knowledge.
