Casebook Message Boards: General Discussion: General Topics: Strangulation?
Author: Diana Friday, 17 August 2001 - 08:04 pm | |
A number of times in the past it has been suggested on these boards that Jack strangled them before cutting their throats. Last week I read a book about a strangulation murder. The victim was found with vertical scratch marks on her neck. The autopsy report said that this happened most of the time with strangulation. When the victim is struggling for their life they will try to pry the killer's hands off their neck. In the process they claw themselves. It is true that the book said "most of the time" or words to that effect, not all the time, but Jack had 5 victims. Did any of them have those vertical scratches?

Diana, You are correct about vertical scratching being rather common among strangulation victims, however you must keep in mind that the Ripper's victims were not exactly left with their throats intact. There was evidence, in at least some cases (including Tabram's) of strangulation, such as clenched fingers and bruising. In Mary Kelly's case it's impossible to tell but smothering could also be a possibility considering the ripped and bloodied corner of a bedsheet that seems to have made it over her face at some point during her mutilation. Also, the simple fact that the victims were lying on their backs prior to having their throats slit clearly suggests their were demobilized in some way, strangulation being the most likely. Yours truly, Tom Wescott
