Hi, Mark: There are a number of websites that have information on Bethlehem Hospital, or Bedlam, the mental asylum that stood in Moorfields, London, until the first decades of the nineteenth century. I believe the Imperial War Museum occupies part of the site of Bedlam. Try the following for information on the institution: http://www.roberthooke.org.uk/batten4.htm www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/~zierke/steeleye.span/songs/ boysofbedlam.html http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~craddock/places.html http://www.english.upenn.edu/~jlynch/Courses/95c/Texts/bedlam.html As for Ripper Walks, those led by noted Ripper author Donald Rumbelow are probably the best. Check out this recent article from USA Today on Rumbelow's tour: http://www.usatoday.com/life/travel/leisure/2000/ltl225.htm By the way, if you are in the US, you will have the chance to meet Don Rumbelow in person at the upcoming April 19-21 US Ripper convention in Baltimore. Let us know if you will be there! See http://www.casebook-productions.org/ Best regards Chris George

Thanks for the info, i wasn't really aware how long bedlam had lasted for. What i'm really looking for is decriptions of the insane asylums, ie the treatment of patients and how the places were set out, around the end of the 19th century. ie around jack the ripper's time. I can't seem to find much info on what the conditions of these places were like. So if anyone could help me i would be greatly appreciative. thanks.
